Just got a new one with mounting kit from Jimmy Green. They suggest mounting the danbuoy inboard 'to prevent accidental deployment'. however, it seems to make more sense on my boat to mount outboard the guard rails next to the horseshoe lifebuoy. Any advice? And do forumites attach the danbuoy rope to the horseshoe lifebuoy?

Any instructions are going to be pretty vague and general, given the variety of boats out there. Do what makes sense for your installation.

The Dan buoy is typically tied to one of the horseshoes, the idea being that the MOB can see the dan buoy and swim towards it, where he will find the additional buoyancy of the horseshoe. I'm not sure how well that really works in practise. There's an argument that marking the area and providing additional buoyancy are separate functions, and by not tying them together you make it easier to deploy each.

Personally I have a Jon Buoy rather than a traditional Dan, so the question doesn't arise :)

I have both danbuoy and (2) horseshoe life buoys mounted inside the rail. There are several reasons for this. First you will see a number of boats with the carrier mangled up questioning the easy of deployment of the horsehoe. Outside the rail is very vulnerable for any boat which is likely to raft up anywhere, the can easily get tangled up. Second, if in the unlikely event the device needs to be deployed, I would rather have a crew member working from inside the cockpit rather than leaning over the rail, increasing the possibility of their joining the first casualty. Third and most important, the horsehoe makes a nice comfy backrest when I'm sitting on the coaming.
