I need a damp meter for grp but don't fancy spending that much on one. Has anyone got any recommendations for damp metering on the cheap?

I only wish to determine if any areas are damper than others or if there is any persistance of damp in certain areas. I don't need to meaningfully quantify the amount of dampness.

Can I therefore use a ten quid jobby from B&Q?

Obliged

Cheapo from B&Q etc.

these are builders wall meters for finding damp in walls ..... but cheapos are for the DIY guy to play at this.
They are a) not senistive enough, b) misleading and don't go deep enough into strata.

Better you get a friendly boat-yard or surveyor to run his meter over it instead of falsely reading some builders meter.

Protimeter used to supply a meter for this - but it quickly got revised and a hefty addition added to the rear to increase its capability. Still it only gave an indication and costs a lot for literally nothing.

There is no cheap easy way round it ...... some used to advocate the sellophane strip taped to scraped hull and wait for water beads to develop ....... ugh !!!!!!!

These are electronic gadgets and you would be able to find cct diagrams somewhere. If you have a friend (or a youngster into electronic experimentation) they could search the net and build you one.

Google: DISCOVER CIRCUITS for about 8000 circuits. If my memory serves me right, there are some circuits for that. I have a dry stee boat, so I dont need one damp meter, but if I did I would build or design one quick quick.
