OOps, this is a true story

Had a few beers on the beach before returning to our boat at anchor.
Decided to stay the night and started a bottle of wine.

Yacht comes hurtling through the anchorage, idiots !

Then skipper comes through swimming after it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Keep head down and pretend to hide howls of laughter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Unfortunately everyone else has pretended not to see it and no one wants to weigh anchor.

Skipper now getting tiered and yacht still heading for Normandy.

error 1
Time for a heroic rescue.......not /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Jump into tender and head for skipper, he says he is fine, he has flotation and he asks me to get the boat first.

error 2

catch boat up but now what ?
How can I board it, how can I stop it ?
managed to get a sheet and forced it into the wind.

error 3

Now close to Old Harry and thinking it will take the rest of the evening to sail it back I decided to put it under tow, the plan was to head to wind until enough speed was gained so I could then turn back to the anchorage.

error 3

It capsized /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

error 4

Try to tow it while on its side.............now she turned turtle(upside down) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

error 5

jump in , right it and sail it back towing my tender (should have taken wallet out of pocket first /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Once boat was righted I slackened off the main and jib sheets and towed it back to be reunited with the raggie.

Once the drink drive regs come in I would have no choice but to let the raggie swim into the distance while I call in a mayday.

I know I made mistakes but it is not easy at the time
SAve skipper or boat first ?

once skipper was in the tender would I have adequate speed and endurance to catch the boat ?

Once the drink drive regs come into force, surely you'd still be stuck on the beach? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Amazing and a story that made my day! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
However - it seems under the new drink drive laws you can be in charge of the tender under 7 metres and be over the limit but then again you were in charge of a sailing boat which means you were in charge of a bigger boat but again that boat is exempt from those laws as it is under 7 knots and you couild claim that even when using the current instead of wind in its sails - would still be well under 7 knots when operated upside down. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

How did the raggie thank you?

Possibly not, SWMBO and I always share the driving of a car and I see no reason why we couldnt do the same with the tender

I drive there, she drives back /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Exhaustively /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif, he had been in the water for 20 mins since I saw him, he could have swam all the way from the beach ???????????

He was very jovial until I said I would return shortly with a pen and paper so we could take down salvage details /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

He didnt see the funny side at all /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

(needless to say I didnt return for a salvage claim)

For someone who claims not to be able to steer at less than 20 knots, this sounds like a brilliant job, well done. I hardly think you made any errors worth worrying about.

In answer to your question, you were absolutely right to go for the skipper first.

The mistake (if any) was in not insisting on recovering him.

People in trouble don't always make good judgements and panic, cold or embarrassment can make them say the stupidest things while sounding entirely rational. I'd already be a bit wary of his decision making given that he's the one in the water and had recently come up with "my boat's blown away so I'll just swim after it and catch it up... you see people swimming faster than boats all the time".

Even if he didn't have a problem there and then, he may have been heading for one and it could have been very different -- and unpleasant -- if you'd lost sight of him.

On the otherhand, if you had picked him up you a) have made the situation dramatically safer, and b) picked up one grateful, relieved deck hand who may be very useful in getting hold of his yacht.

And, if I could, I'd have had its sails down before attempting to do anything with it. Yacht things are a menace with the sails up /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bet the beer had worn off a bit by the end of it too...

Yup - indeed this is a HUGE error ... I was faced with a smaller scale version - a sailboarder had fallen off and become separated - approaching him he asked us to get his board ... decision was easy ... No ... I'm going to pick him up - or do nothing - his choice ... I didn't want to have to deal with the board ... that's his problem!

Who cares? Explaining to the coastguard how you have lost sight of the skipper that you had alongside but you do have his boat (nothing that can capsize and be righted could possibly be a proper yacht /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif), will never be one of anyones more pleasant moments. NEVER allow key rescue decisions to be made by the wettest, coldest victim in the scenario.

I will get them developed today but not sure how to use the scanner.

Although the incident occurred in the Anchorage by the time I went to the skipper and then caught up with the boat it was well off shore so I doubt much will be visible of me getting wet and capsizing it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

You can get the images put on a CD the time of processing by most labs at these days.

Yeah, hang the expense, we want to see microscopic pictures of what may, or may not be, DAKA in full rescue mode.
