Do your lifelines trip you up? I know mine do! I have nearly gone over the side more than once. Just moving around the cockpit can be a pain in the a**s.
Spotted a product today that could perhaps be adapted to marine use. Its called a "Fall Limiter" made for the construction/warehouse industry. basically a glorified retractable webbing dog lead with a locking mechanism. Stainless, aluminium and plastic construction. Made by 'Miller" www.dalloz.com
Anybody used one of these? Opinions please.

I'd be carefull if I was you. As you say , these things are "Fall limiters", and are usually fixed ABOVE the person using it, and when they "Fall" from a height, the arrestor kicks in and they are left dangling around in mid air.

I would be concerned as to using it at deck level, as when you "fall" you are going horizontal (relatively) & not vertical.

You could fix one on each side from the spreaders, I suppose. This would give you the vertical fall that these things are designed for, but they are fairly heavy things and would probably cause more grief than they are supposed to mitigate.

All IMHO of course.

You obviously did not read the specifications. They work exactly the same way as a car seat belt so rapid movement in ANY direction will be arrested, they also only weigh 2 lbs. I am considering mounting one in the cockpit.

I would be very concerned about using this device.

I have a single seat in the cabin of my yacht and wish to fit a seat belt to it. I would never fit an innertia reel seatbelt, the movement of the yacht would continuously lock it up and make it impossible to unlatch.
Have you ever been hanging upside down in a car held by a seatbelt which is too tight to allow the catch to be released?.

If you have you would never consider using one of those devices. Consider when it locks up whenever you hit a wave, especially when you are trying to move about the boat.

In my opinion I would never consider it.

I doubt they'd be engineered for use in a corrosive environment. I think they work by means of little bobweights being "centrifuged" out against a sort of toothed pawl so they need to be spinning at a certain minimum speed before they lock up. If that's the case, I'm not sure I'd trust one after a year or two at sea when the mechanism is all rusted up!
