Our boat is coming out soon for the usual winter maintenance & antifoul.

How do I antifoul the bits of the underside hidden by the chocks used to hold the boat up...? - Do I run alongside the crane at the relaunch with brush in hand, or am I missing something obvious??

Thanks,

Graham.

Not daft, and your first guess is right!

You do indeed try and dab at them with a brush and the remains of the last pot of antifouling paint as the boat trundles inexorably towards the water!

We used to paint round the props not too close to leave ridge lines that would need to be faired away, wait for the antifoul to dry then put in a temporary prop (builder's acro with wood chocks or timber) on the now dry part and then undo one leg of the cradle sufficiently far so as to get a roller under and then paint the area. This method takes a bit of time to do all four props all but is worth the effort for the finish and ensuring you get an even coat. Just make sure your temporary props are well secured !

Not daft.

Best is you ask for a "lift and hold" just before their lunch break, and relaunch just after lunch, if possible. This way you can do the missing bits. Make sure there's a few safety chocks in place while you do this in case the crane lets go.

DO NOT try and do the alternative - adjust the chocks whilst in place to get everywhere - antifoul isn't that important really and lots of boats fall over cos of this.

Most yards now insist that you don't touch the props and supports once they have layed up the vessel. However most I have dealt with will come and move the support or move existing and put temporary supports in for you. Although it is not rocket science and most could work out where to put the temp supports it's best left for the yard to do to their satifaction...insurance, accidents etc.

Ah, yes, if you just want to do a quick 'slap on' job but if you wanted to fair, prime and apply recommended number of coats it would be a long lunch /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On our cradle, I can move the chocks round a bit. Shore up the boat with a length of timber and some wedges while doing the moving. Check with your boatyard, as some (understandably) don't seem to like people moving shoring! They may help/supervise if you ask as its a common problem.

On the marina's "Storage Ashore" T&C's, the only one on bold print is along the lines of "Don't fanny around with the props or wedges..."

I like tcm's lunchtime launch idea.

Thanks for the the bottom-of-the-keel reminder.

G.
