Just recieved my new Genoa, which is by specification Dacron.
I am quite surprised how hard and stiff it seems to be, although I havent hoisted it yet.
Is the material impregnated with some type of chemical which will deminish with time, but makes it very stiff when new? as it feels as if it could break in two at the moment.
Never been in contact with a brand new sail before, so any consolation greatly recieved. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It's a resin that the material impregnated with. I got a new main and it was very tricky to flake down until it was about 6 months old. Some of the folds took a long time to flatten as well. Into the 2nd season it started to handle well. Mind you, we only sail 3 or 4 hours at a time.
Be carefull handling the sail as the edges of the material at the seams is very sharp and can't half get under your fingernails!!

Yes the stiffnes is fine. It is old sails that feel soft and cuddly. Just enjoy the stiffness and noisiness of the new sail. And congratulations on the new sail. I hope iut makes your boat go really well. olewill

Filler in the material, helps to keep its shape etc. If you want soft sails, go for "clipper canvas" dacron ones, I'm sure there are other makes as well.
