D2 or D4 ?

Do you mean D3 or D4? D2 is sail boat engine :)
If so D4 every time, unless its the latest D3 I wouldn't touch one, however most marine engines never wear out they just expire due to lack or use and servicing.

Being kind, the best thing I can say about the previous generation D3 is that "some owners have had reasonable reliability if used, serviced and winterised regularly". Latest generation D3 is much better: Volvo threw almost everything away apart from the block, which is as close to an admission of failure as you can get.

D4 is much more robust ... in production since 2004/2005 with only quite minor changes to strainers and outdrive steering rams.

Whilst it sounds like a D series engine question I think the OP is referring to Eberspacher D2 or D4 for heating over winter?

I'd consider the Webasto Airtop 2000 for that size of boat, seems to be a simpler system and possibly more reliable though I'm sure each brand has their advocates

Ahh.

Ooops.

Advantage of the larger unit will be that things get warmer, faster.
Especially if it's a D4-300 :D
