The tacho on Tintin (Ovni 435) seems to have died. The engine is a Volvo Penta D2-55, and the tacho is a VDO, Volvo part number 873686.

I've checked all the multipin connectors to the engine panel, and the output from the sensor on the flywheel, and all is fine.

I took it apart, and let it dry out in rice in the airing cupboard at home. I'd read somewhere that this can sometimes help, and it did with the LCD hour display, which no longer flickers, but sadly the tacho needle only does a small jump on starting and then drops to zero again.

Tintin has been laid up for 2 years, so some problems are to be expected I guess.

I could get a new Volvo tacho (£££’s over 300).

Parts4Engines has an aftermarket tacho for about £85, and the same is available on eBay for £20 to £40.

The original tacho has 12v supply +ve and -ve and signal +ve and -ve.

The cheap aftermarket tach has 12v +ve and -ve but only a +ve signal, so I am assuming it shares the -ve with the 12v supply, and therefore I am guessing it would bond the -ve to the engine.

This is a concern with the Ovni, due to the Aluminium hull and electrolysis (if I am understanding the Ovni and the physics correctly).

Has anyone used the cheaper non-volvo tachos? And was it easy to programme for the flywheel sensor pulses?

An example at this link….

There is a link in the description to the set up instructions. I think I would want to check the calibration against an independent accurate tachometer.

The description says the Parts4Engines tacho takes its signal from the W terminal therefore it may not be suitable for the D2-55 although it is listed as a replacement tacho for that engine. You need to check with P4E

Personally, having used the dudes at Parts4Engines for years, I would buy through them and pay the premium (still far cheaper than £300!) and then ask them any questions you have about fitting it. I changed my entire panel after water had got in and knackered it, so I can't comment on just the tacho replacement. Good luck!

I remember Tin Tin as a brand new boat in Poole in ~2006, we had an Ovni 385 moored there for years. If you're on Facebook there's a very active Ovni owners group that's very good with tech advice for these boats.
