Cylinder one on nanni n450 for valve clearances

Hi could somebody please tell me which is cylinder 1
Is it closest to the spline to turn the engine over? or the other end near the gearbox? Thank you very much. I need to check valve clearances

From the workshop manual of another Kubota engine:-

[3] CYLINDER NUMBER

The cylinder numbers of KUBOTA diesel engine are designated
as shown in the figure.

The sequence of cylinder numbers is given as No.1, No.2 and
No.3 starting from the gear case side.

I was wondering if number one is closest to the cranking spline and belt or the gearbox end of engine
