Internet cafes are everywhere and have been for years. Until recently the UK was the worst served, 3rd world not excepted but has now caught up through local libraries. (not because we are backward but because everyone who wants a computer has one at home).

It's worth setting up an email account on hotmail or gmail for ease of access.

Yes, there are several in St Peter Port. On the high street (northbound) toward the end on the RHS in a funky place (far too funky and noisy for me) and then in the library and also one of the streets west bound from the high street. You can't miss them. My detailed knowledge is a consequence of two weeks stormbound and engine failure bound in Guernsey. I know the bus routes really well!

Don't know abt Cherbourg specifically, Robin, but most French post offices of any decent size have a pay as you go t'internet arrangement.

You'll probably find an internet terminal in some French Captineries (?spelling?), or at least there were two years ago... Cherbourg and St. Vaast had one each.

All you need to do is buy a phone card, and have a basic knowledge of French. As mentioned above, an internet based e-mail account helps too.

Is that how you pay or is a credit card OK? We have internet access to our e-mail accounts already so it's just getting on-line to view them that we need. I have the laptop and mobile on board but have no idea how these connect or even IF that is needed if we can do a quick check via a Pay As You Go computer ashore.

Thanks

Robin

Yep.... definately a phone card, bought from the marina desk. I know because I was chasing voluntary redundancy at the time, and was waiting for e-mails from work to say I didn't have to go back /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hopefully someone who's been across recently will chip in if the situations changed, but it used to be right next to the entrance to the toilets and showers.

There's (at least) one in Cherbourg.

Roughly, turn right out of Chantereyne then up one of the side streets by the marine school, then left at a bakers. Not far. Best bet is to ask for directions at the capitainerie, they've got it shown on a map.

Many thanks to all. It seems I will be able to find somewhere easily enough and I have done a few quick trials with the webmail access to our e-mail accounts and it all seems to work OK even with sending attachments. So now all I need do is explain to any customers that call why there is a lot of wind noise or a diesel running in my 'office'! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Must be a power cut and we have the generator running with the windows open?

I once phoned work to say I was sick and wouldn't be in, just as a French family came out of the showers and stood next to the phone booth yapping away very loudly /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Of Course!

This will be my version of all the Disaster Recovery Planning projects I've had to provide answers to! What happens if there is a fire in my office and all my records are lost...

I feel a lot better about it all now!

If you're testing before you go, it might be worth doing a test from your local internet cafe/library. Some email accounts will only work if you connect via your own ISP. That's why I moved to Hotmail.

We use NTL and they say their 'Webmail' is accessible from any computer connected to the web, we just go to the Webmail page and enter e-mail names and passwords. We have regular e-mail addresses with ntl and the webmail works with the same account names too. What NTL apparently will NOT allow is for me to dial up using a mobilephone and the laptop, they only accept incoming calls from NTL or BT lines.

However if I get a chance I will do a test as you say, thanks for the tip!
