cutless bearings

I have a Hunter 26 with 1 inch shaft, P bracket & cutless bearing etc... However I have never changed a cutless bearing before, but suspect that it will not simply "knock out" with ease ! Does anybody have experience of changing a cutless bearing, either by knocking it out OR by using a "puller" ? OR perhaps a PBO article on the subject ? Many thanks.

Most Cutless bearings are also fixed by one or two small hex soc grub screws - make sure you locate them(probably covered with A/F - scrape all the A/F off and you should find them) and remove them before you try removing the bearing - the best way is to cut a slot with a hacksaw and then the bearing will collapse as you pull it out. Make up a 'puller' with studding amd tubing.

The hacksaw & drift method worked for me with our previous boat, a puller was not needed., not forgetting the grub screws first.

Undo the grubscrews and try getting the end of the shaft behind the bearing to drift it out - otherwise you'll have to cut it out with a hacksaw blade (easy with phenolic ones but a pig with brass) - I now leave about 15mm of cutless bearing protruding so I can grab it to pull it out.

Hi,
I have changed the bearing twice on my Konsort and found no problems.
Two foot length of 3/8 studding, a socket at one end that was the exact diameter of the outer brass case of the cutlass, at the other end a piece of TV aerial tube the diameter of the P bracket. Remove grub screw(s) and just wind it out. It was not necessary to cut the bearing and the installation was the reverse of removal!
