Yachts out of the water now (Hunter Ranger 265) I have noticed that the cutlass bearing has some sideways play, I take it that it should be replaced, my question is how do you replace it.

Thanks in advance

There was an article in the Oct 97 PBO on replacing a cutlas bearing. I could Email it to you. Incidentally, my shaft coupling is undone as I am fitting a stripper. I noticed some slight play in the cutlas bearing (around 1 mm slack ?). I was advised by the local Volvo agent that this was normal. So I suppose that it depends on what the slack is. I shall watch this thread with interest to read the expert advice.

When fitting a new one you will find some play , 0.50mm is not far off new .Don't forget that they are water lubricated so its not close tolerances.
To get it out well that depends on how it is fitted, normal is interference fit, so warming up the outer part of the p bracket will help .
Some have grub screws and then there some that are in side the stern tube its self
Moving the bearing can be very hard ,I prefer to have the shaft clear so the risk of damaging the shaft is kept to a minimum, but that's in the ideal world.
You might want to get some steel tubing that suites your shaft size cut it along its length, a couple of jubilee clips to hold the two halves in place then get your hammer out .
If you can get your shaft out great then you can press the bearing out, a pulley is ideal for this. I have a hydraulic pulley set which does the job gradually .
It is the case that every time it will vary from bearing to bearing so take your time .

You made a point of saying your bearing was worn side to side !! does that indicate your shaft is out of line ,because I normally find its the bottom of the bearing that gets worn .
T Norris supply from stock or will make one to suit if needed.
