Hi, replacing the cutlass bearing on my Newbridge Virgo Voyager 23ft built in 1984. The bearing looks different to anyhting I can find online or locally. It has no brass or fibre glass sleeve, just looks like a rubber cylinder. It measures 3/4in x 1 1/4in x 2''. Has anyone replaced one of these before and could you recommend a source for the part. Thanks.

Any cutless bearing will be suitable, just provide the bearing carrier ID and the Shaft OD stating the length of bearing you require and if you want an interference or clearance fit.

They are availble with either nitrile rubber, plastic or composite material as the bearing surface. Some are housed in bronze or a non metallic housing others are machined from one piece of material. Is it possible that the bronze shell has remained corroded into the P bracket?

very likely that your cutlass bearing rubber has become unbonded from its brass sleeve which is still in the P bracket. Look for some grub screws in the side of the P bracket. you may well need an extractor to get the sleeve out.

Sounds like a standard size apart from the length. I replaced mine this year and cut the old one out with a hacksaw after first removing the Prop shaft.
This pic shows the grub screw that should be there. you may have to scrape away old anti fouling to find it.

I have same boat - have done mine once - it is simply a rubber insert. Simply get the old one out and then push the new one back in - some washing up liquid will help with that.

Got mine from Purbeck Marine at Cobbs Quay in Poole

Thanks Steve, I will chase up with Purbeck marine in Cobb's Quay. That's where I bought the boat so I suppose it's where I should have looked first. Appreciate the help everyone.
