I'm installing an HSB2 network (Raymarine). The manual gives dire warnings as to the folly of cutting and rejoining the hsb cable (the inter-unit cable) - has anybody here done that and survived with an operating system? Or is it really a folly to even contemplate such a silly thing?

Why risk it? At the very best (or worst?) any intermittent problem might be caused by the cable work and raymarine won't support the units if they know about the cable.

yes, quite right, it's a matter of the cable being an absolute bitch to get through the cabling route with the large plugs on the end, and probably, in defeat, being routed "above ground" in view which looks rather ghastly.

I wd think it shd be ok to snip the cable between the plugs and resolder. Removing/refitting the plug will be difficult, so better to do the snip/rejoin along the bight of the cabkle as it were. You could just try it - you're only risking a cable. If you buy lots of HSB2 components you'll likely have a spare cable or two anyway?

Hmmmm........The HSB cables are pretty expensive - it's not like Seatalk cable (I don't know what the difference is) but a 10m HSB2 cable was £110 or thereabouts!

Yeah but of you are making a network you will invariably have to buy a longish run of cable or two, and then the standard 1m or 3m cables that you get one of in each box when you buy HSB2 screens, become redundant. At least, that was my thinking!
