I have just taken delivery of a new boat and am trying to find a suitable flag staff. Stupidly the boat comes with a very nice staff holder but the pole itself is an amazing £500 option. Needless to say the importer never bothers specifying this option!

I thought I’d be able to source something myself but all chandleries seem to sell only two designs, a wooden staff with a 25mm diameter end or a similar design with a brass end of 32mm diameter. Alas my socket is something like 30mm.

I guess I could change the existing holder but this looks very well bonded to the grp.

I think I need to get something made to fit exactly, can anyone suggest someone local to Port Solent who might oblige?

I would reduce the 32mm one to 30mm, anyone with a lathe?

Common to find an Ensign staff turned down in diameter at socket end .... makes it a tighter fit ....

eg my wooden one is about 30mm original turned down at end to about 26mm ..... to be tight fit into socket. Stays without any need for lashing or whatever .... been in gales etc. no problem.

Problem with this is the 32mm one is something like 28mm with 2mm thick brass ring around it. Impossible to turn down.

Buy a broom handle or go to a B&Q and get some dowelling or a sawmill and get some dowelling, stain and varnish.

My father, who was never known for spending money unneccessarily, sailed very happily for many years with a varnished broom handle as a flag staff.

I will gladly sell you one for only HALF the price quoted by your manufacturer. Shipping is extra - PM me to arrange it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe my maths is not to good, but when i did maths 28mm with 2mm brass ring does equal 30 mm which is the size you require.

Our am i missing something here!!!!!!

If i am take the brass ring off and get another sleeve made to right diameter....

whatever size it is???? as i may be have lost the plot of what you are requiring....

28mm + 2mm on one side + 2mm on t'other side = 32mm think he meant that thickness of brass at one point is 2mm .... making a 4mm increase in diameter ....

No ??

Anyway .... Broom Handle or even one of those curtain poles that fit small windows ??
