Hi All,

with the comments on here about self build boats (colvic, humber etc) I would like to pose a question.

If you had a Custom built boat designed and made for you and fitted out by that yard then would it be a lemon to sell.

I believe that custom building a craft of say 30ft with modern techniques by an experienced builder (15years+) and designed by a famous Naval Architect (100s of designs succesful) can work out cheaper than production (just) but you get exactly what you want. If by getting this I knew it would fulfill all requirements for 5years, and then look at selling (no hurry) what do you think?

Anybody ever considered it! She would be composite construction, use regular diesels (prob Volvo) and have top quality fit out with all toys!

Just a thought I am having....

Its true you would get exactly what 'you' want, but is it what someone else wants.
Its a point to consider with eventual resale in mind. just make sure that its not too radical or personalised or you could severly limit your market appeal.
A certain famous F1 driver is trying to sell his Princess which has a pink colour scheme in the cabin (chosen by his wife!) according to the gossip on one of these forums.

I think there is a difference between what you are talking about and say a Colvic or Humber, etc.
As long as it was a quality not quirky craft then I would see no problem.

So a slightly radical design, but fitted out in contempoary light oak and designed for family cruising might be out?

The design would be different, but the layout and fitout conventional with a tweak or two but nothing outrageous. Hull would be Blue, Superstructure White, Totty on board always yummy and ......

Just a thought!

It sounds a recipe for cost, hassle and frustration to me. Unless you really can't find a boat that suits your needs, or you value individuality above all else, then i'd go for a production boat every time.

Possibly,

But there is also the pleasure and excitement of getting what you want. Not an easy option, but the builder specialises in single boat builds so has to get it right every time. This would be no Trader and built in UK where my Surveyor could keep an eye on it!

Hassle and pleasure in equal quantities! He just finished one this week and the build and fit out cost were £200k, no idea what Margin he then added. He sold it to some lurvely frenchies in Paris! Mine would be one of his medium commisions and could be the start of a new model range /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

All hypothetical of course at this stage.

Cheers

Ahh, well, I have to finD one yet! Then find a type of boat I want and then work out costings then raise the cash.....

As I said, all hypothetical at this stage (but I do know of a builder who was recomended). Anyway a production boat is probably best!

Cheers

the reality is there is a lot of semi-custom builders around
American top Brand Magnum comes to mind
followed by similar builder Otam from Italy

these cost about 25-50% to a Sunseeker mostly due to big engines

still in Italy over the 15 mtrs there is a quite a few brands who offer a great of customization

some builders from Venice come to mind like VZ and Carnevali very high quality both of them with a similar price to a Ferretti
same goes for famous group Inrizzardi, they have quite a deal of customization - semi-custom on Italcraft from 38ft and Rizzardi from 45 ft other brand Possilipo goes up from 65 feet

this week I also spoke to a yard from Rome who is doing quite well named Casa who will be glad to customize

still this is a good thread as boat prices seem to go up and customization for the client seems always getting less, better buy a Cranchi at this stage..

still i think doing this around the 9-10 mtrs (30-35 feet) is a bit difficult, but then depens what u mean by custom or semi-custom...

Thanks Nettuno,

Great Post as usual. Say the Hull and bow work were standard, all else by you including interior layout (within the realms of fixed bulkheads) is free to design. As is size of cabins and cockpit.

It really is Custom as will be Hull number 1!

Cheers

Think most production builders, find clangers in hull no1, changed in 2 and again in 3. Till they get it about right about mid production. When the new model is on the drawing boards.

I came across a custom built boat, whilst buying mine. It had a wok cooker, nothing else, just a wok. Broker did not suggest looking at it. Another one I found, broker only reluctantly said it was on there books, but kept it quiet. We looked at it anyway, the owner was very proud of it. But the inside was something like a Turkish brothel. We did not inspect further.

So, whats the question. Do buyers want custom?

Or will it sell again??

I've the feeling, that experienced buyers dont buy new anyway. Only newbies buy new, there are exceptions of course.

So on the grounds that your custom boat, would be designed by a newby, yes. It probably would be a lemon.

hi Nautorios

this is the Rizzardi 63, it has 4 different internal layouts available and all the interior can be choosen
it is a succesful model in Italy and France I think about 20 have been delivered in topline and hardtop modes

would fit your level of customization
