Cushions

Thanks Jimmy

I was looking for a good external cushion manufacturer.
Preferably someone we could pop into.
We are thinking of making a set of foredeck cushions.
Something a bit different from the usual thing but I'm not sure what yet - thought it might be interesting to get some ideas from the cushion makers themselves.

Hi Mike

Over on Petem's Fairline Owners Club, this post suggests that the oem for Fairline is Tockfield Ltd for the upholstery, and MJ Marine Trimmers for the external cushions:

Any good?

It's much more dispersed than the canvas work, where as you say flexicovers have a large chunk of the OEM market. Yup, it's MJ for fairline, hockley in Essex, googlable. MJ also do some of the FL internal upholstery too, eg the 2 sofas in Sq58. Hurric, I'd recommend you find the OEM supplier. On the last boat I used a very well established trim firm, but not the OEM supplier, to copy the fairline originals but the dimensions weren't perfect and the finished job wasn't perfect enough. For the new boat I went to MJ who had the original patterns and cutting programs and the work was perfect, just like the originals. If you're thinking of switching from vinyl to Sunbrella, do. Once you have full sunbrella on the external cushions you'll never look back. Sunbrella works perfectly well on the foredeck cushions too (actually uou need Sunbrella plus, not ordinary sunbrella)

Thanks jfm

Does anyone know who Princess use?
I cant remember seing cushions being made when we visited the factory.

Sunbrella was the kind of special idea that I was thinking about.
Also thought that some velcro to fix towels on might be a good idea.
Looking for a clever idea with the pillow part as well.
And then there's the storage side of things - obviously needs to be made from at least two parts so that we can stow it with the others in the crew cabin.

My thoughts are to find someone (possibly local to Devon) who I can talk to "face to face".

I had sunbrella foredeck cushions, and have switched back to vinyl. With the sunbrella I felt compelled to take them in when it rained, and each time I left the boat, whereas the vinyl stays out all summer, and just gets put away for the winter. We always lay towels on the sunbed cushions anyway, so the sunbrella is less benefit than it is on the flybridge seat cushions, where there's no way i'd go back to vinyl.

Hey Mike,

Have you spoken to John (fellow Walker Bay speed king) just along the pontoon from you? He really is a font of knowledge in this regard and an expert on all things upholstery, his business trimmed for Aston Martin for many years and solved Branson's problems on his trans-Atlantic jets! He would probably make them for you himself!

Yet another benefit of berthing in Sant Carles......

Oh yes
I'd forgotten about John - a real perfectionist.

We take our cushions in all the time.

The ones on the old Sealine were in a really bad state when we bought the boat but we decided to use them for just one season. With a bit of TLC they actually lasted the whole time that we had the boat. TLC only meant putting them away whilst we werent on the boat.

On the Princess, we bring the FB ones down whenever we can. I know its a bit of a pain but they are still as good as new. They all go away in the crew cabin when we leave the boat.

If you dont take care of them, the foam fills with water and the fabric begins to rot.

I have covers for the flybridge and cockpit cushions that I put on when we leave or if it rains, which is much easier than putting them all in the crew cabin. I'm not too fussed about the bow cushions, I bought an off white colour which I think looks OK, and hides the dirt, and if they get too dirty or damaged, then i'll have them re-covered. I also used special foam that doesn't retain water. Lugging cushions round the boat is too much hassle to do every time it rains IMO.

A firm in plymouth made the very nice sexy ones that arrived with my boat.

i have the name on the boat so will look it up at the w/e if you still need same.

Mine are the same as Princess have (used to have??) in the Swanwick office with white knots in the corners.

I have sunbrella covers on all my boat and as JFM says it works wonders and you will not want any other material.
The cushions in the cockpit are to Elasponge unique and patented towel sponge which is one of the things better to Sunbrella but costs also double.
You can have a look here on www.cmstyle.it

external cushions

Jfm has said it all really, but it MUST be Sunbrella plus rather than the standard as it has a waterproof lining.
resists all sorts too, i'll post the testing photos when i have a moment.
Can also second MJ in Essex, Martin made a fantastic job on my cockpit cushions.

Can someone give me the contact details for MJ in essex please?

i have a full set of interior cushions that need re-covering!

TIA

John

This is a thread from the end of last year.
I spent some of the winter measuring, designing and getting some bespoke cushions made.
The trick is to cut a template so that the design fits first time.
In February, I realised that I had all the measurements but I couldn't be sure that anything that I designed would fit.
So thanks to Mr O'Leary, I popped over to the boat for a few days with a roll of wallpaper and cut a template. £5 to fly out 5 euros return and it gave ne a good excuse to have a few days on the boat.

I wanted thick cushions - I dont like the standard 2inch thick ones and as said above, it had to be Sumbrella fabric.

I then got a local guy here in Devon to make them up and we took the out with us in the car at Easter.

The end result is 4 inch thick foam matresses rather than cushions. I also had some pillow cases made and we bought some standard household pillows to fill them.

At one stage, I was planning fitting a luff track on the forward edge to hold them in place. Instead though, I ended up with 50mm webbing straps and Velcro - attached to the boat with "webbing bridges" (note Jimmy!!!) - works very well and definately wont blow away.

Here is the result - We're very pleased

Hi Mike

I just remembered the answer to this - it's Lang and Potter in Plymouth:

http://www.langandpotter.com/

However, it's my distant recollection that they are strictly trade only, so you may find that they won't talk directly to you. Worth a try though. Good luck!

Cheers
Jimmy

Yes, Jimmy
In fact, PMYS read this thread and sent me an email with Lang and Potter's contact info - the power of the forum!!

I contacted Lang anp Potter and they have the templetes and would have done everything I wanted but I'd already started down the route. They were very helpful and I can confirm that they have all the Princess templates for all the cushions. So they should be able to supply any Princess cushions. Not badly priced either - not the cheapest but certainly not a rip off.

BTW thanks to PMYS - again, service when it counts.

Hi Mike, cushions look good and I'm completely with you on the thickness thing. If you don't mind the question, how much did it cost to get the cushions made up, and the foam?

Incidentally on the T40 you definitely need the luff track at the leading edge of the cushions otherwise the wind does get under them at speed.

You going to be at Swanwick over the weekend perchance?

Cheers
