I'm here!! - I guess I come under the stupidity heading! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Uhmm, I guess this is what happens when all the newbies complain about the 'old guard', and the old guard let all the boring newbies get on with it! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif - there, that should stir things up a bit

Hi Learner how you doin still learning?, did I tell you the tale about Phil finding a body int water whilst delivering a boat from Valencia to Duquesa. It makes you realise how excellent the UK set up is for reporting on VHF, i.e the coast guard response is quick and competent.

Not so out here he's about 20nm off Malaga trys getting someone to respond on VHF they must be all asleep, even sends a Pan Pan Pan to no avail.

He then calls 112 ont mobile I believe some international emergency number. They ask what province / town he is in, he says no I'm at sea actually my position is blah blah blah.

Eventually a boat comes out to retreive the haplass drug smuggler or illegal immigrant, and they then call him back and ask if he is sure it is dead. He says well I'm no doctor but hes been face down for two hours so I reckon so.

Like I say makes you realise to excellet set up you have in the UK.

Eeek, as posted before I once found a body at sea too. Quite grim. Was in Ireland, and the rozzers were on hand to take it away

Phil's correct answer I believe should have been "He's been face down 2 hours, no pulse/respiration or vital signs, so he could be a practising lawyer I guess" :)

I suppose we haven't had the weather lately. Took her out to clean the barnacles and then the heavens opened. First bit of boating I've done for weeks. Although this weekend, may have another incident and have to call the RNLI again just to have something to say! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'm well, enjoying French sunshine although back in Blighty this evening ..

Well at least Phil has some good stories...

Funny (?) , last year we were all going on about how safe French/Med waters were but there have been a number of fatalities in last couple of weeks here in SoF -- 1 saily, 2 diving and yesterday a swimmer ..

You have to give it to the Spanish though , if he/she dead nothing much to be done apart from recovery ..

Learner , update us on boat buying plse!! Also dyoo and Corinne fancy a day out? I'm full up wiv visiters for the first week August but mebbe the week beginning 16 August? Or the very last week in August, the one that just runs into september? You can then invoice me for massive storage-of-cover charges

I could post at length about crappo Fairline warranty support and having to send my secretary to France to sort em out (cos I'm too busy to go myself) but tis pretty boring and driving me nuts!

fairline winge

All good. How's WP's doin? Is the place fullof windy's?

Thanks re cover.

OK will sort out dates later. We're booked to be there 12 Aug for a week, then 27-31 Aug or summink, plus I might go down for various 1-2 dayters at short notice if work permits.

Secy trip was to circumvent Fairline's awful service standards. Voltage regulator unit for lights circuit broke, so no lights anywhere on boat. This was about 11am. Arie De B's snappy service offering was (a) bring boat to us so we can diagnose, customers can't diagnose, doh! (b) then we'll order the part snailspeed (c) when it comes in, we'll schedule a time to fit it. Meantime, you just sit in darkness. Great.

I asked em (still at 11am) if any workmen to fit it tomorrow. They said yes so I booked em, boat tobe there 9.15am next day. With gallic disbelief, they assumed I was mad but said yes.

Now I had to get the part else would suffer "We told you so" in a French accent. Fairline Oundle had in stock, but refused to sell, can only sell thru Peters, see. So I bought it credit card £600 off Peters to collect from Oundle in 2hour. Sent motorbike London to Oundle, got it, secretary then flew on 6.10am Gatwick flight and was in La Rague 9.30am, just as the boat was being moored up at AdB. They were amazed to have the part <24hrs, and fitted it, and everything was fixed.

Now to unravel this mess I've asked Fairline to refund £600 becuase it was (no-one disputes) a warranty item. but becuase I didn't make a warranty claim "thru the proper channels" I am miles away from getting a refund. And of course, there is no chance for secretary airfare refund, I wouldn't waste time asking

So typical mess. These guys have no idea how to deliver a slick service. They think if you buy a 3/4mill boat and all the lights go out, you're happy to sit around for a week+ in July while they (maybe) move the parts. They wouldn't dream of doing what I did, just puttem on a plane, and now that I've done that they seem unable to find the right triplicate forms to fill in to give me my money back. I sed why not just give me the money and YOU sort out the forms, oh no sir we can't possibly do that..... all gotta be done the Fairline (slow) way.

It would be so easy to run these firms better, but of course best to let them get on with it - "comparative advantage" theory, an economist would say

Re: fairline winge

Well done you for showing the F dealers they couldnt organise a soaking in a rainstorm.

I once had an very special electric motor blow up big time at 10 am one day in North West London. At 1pm I was on the phone to a colleague in New York. He walked out of his factory to his supplier down the road, collected a new motor and took it to JFK, and sent it as captains baggage, and it was on my desk at 8.30am the following day. Less than 24 hours. I took great pleasure in relating that story to some German colleagues who were giving me some crap about not being able to give me a 3 day spares service. It took place in 1977!

Re: fairline winge

Have I missed something here, jfm? Why could'nt Fairline Oundle just call up TNT/DHL and have the part in La Rague for a 9.00am delivery the following morning?
This is a disgrace, frankly. My business is selling construction equipment with unit values similar to boats ie hundreds of thousands of squids and we say to customers that if you order a part from us before 15.00 UK time we can get it out of Italy/Germany into the UK for before 9.00hrs the following day. We've often put staff on planes simply to collect parts and if its a warranty part, there's no charge for that. My customers would'nt expect anything less
What sort of margin did Peters make out of your sale? Lets guess £50-70k. They should be falling over themselves to keep you happy

Will post longish tale soon .... About to hand over money for a 45ft MOBO bought in South Italy. Interesting experiences about Italian regs., brokers, owners, solicitors, shipyards and of course later delivery crew and other forms of transport... don't want to post complete story until the boat is completely ours and on her way to the new home...
