The Patricia Campbell (AKA Andromeda) already has a claim to fame in this forum.

Having been rescued from one calamity, she has now suffered another.

My son, Mark, has just telephoned to inform me that a "friend" of his mistook the funnel for the fresh water inlet.

Having removed the injectors and pumped out the water, the engine ran but one of the pushrods was not correctly seated and the end cup is fractured. He fears a valve stem may have been bent.

Question is - can one cylinder head be removed with the manifolds and intercooler in place?

I fear not. Any experts out there please?

Graham,

I am confused as hell.

Injectors came out OK. Why are we now talking about valve push tubes, they are not disturbed when doing injector top set.

Are you sure your son did not screw up when doing injector top set, Cummins PT injectors designed to crush very slightly with action of valve train when overhead properly set up, incorrectly done top set results in excessive crush causing the injector cup to crack.

Why are we assuming valve has bent??

I have said this before, PT engines are not really for DIY enthusiasts, requires competent tec or plenty of reading up of Cummins Shop Manual and correct tools to do top set properly. The mere fact that that question is being asked suggests that son is screwing around with no Shop manual which is a path to disaster.

IF a valve is damaged I would suggest genuine Diesel ReCon head is fitted, just replacing valve could likely result in catastrophic valve drop.

Find an EXPERIENCED Cummins tec and and pay them to sort the motor out.

Sounds like vessel is being crewed by bunch of one legged guys at an arse kicking competition.

Terribly good sense BUT! No money!

My son is bright and together we removed and replaced the injectors when the boat sank. They were set up correctly with the correct settings. We do have the advice of an expert and my factory is just across the way from two 1/2 megawatt generators powered by the same engines that he installed and maintains.. There are differences though. If you think the engine is complicated you should tackle the gearbox! (I did and it is fixed now).

He holds his hand up to not replacing that injector carefully and admits he must have disturbed the pushrod in the process.

The question stands (and I am sure you have the answer). Can he remove one cylinder head or do the manifolds and the intercooler have to be removed first?

I am afraid pulling one head is not an option, from memory water rail is one issue.

Good to hear you have access to a technical advice.
