Cummins Alternator - bitten twice by pulley taper lock

The multi vee drive pulley on my Cummins alternator is secured by a taper lock collet that wedges between a machined taper in the pulley and the parallel alternator shaft.

Twice now now this has come loose. The first time the wear to the alternator drive shaft was so severe I had to replace the alternator.

The problem seems to be due to the taper lock collet largely bearing it's fixing pressure on to the shaft threads, rather than a section of plain drive shaft. Over time the taper collet loosens its grip on the thread peaks and then fails as the pulley becomes wobbly.

Fortunately this time the shaft hasn't become damaged or worn too severely so I can recover the security of the pulley by installing a spacer to allow the mounting nut to bear home tighter onto the taper lock, which has now worn itself flush with the pulley.

Is there a simpler way of securing a multi vee pulley to the alternator shaft without requiring a taperlock collet ?

If so where can I buy an alternative pulley ?

Thanks.

Trevor, on my Cats, the pulley is clamped by the nut. Can only be removed by an airgun. Bit of a pain if none to hand, and have had to go to the local tyre shop in the past.
