It's alright you blathering on with these words of wisdom, but what about the facts. When do we get the tectonic plate shift? I need to get the boat moved in good time. Please reply by pm so as not to cause a general stampede through Hurst, not until I'm out anyway.

Does that actually result in a "reduction" of reported incidents and a general improvement in safety. Just because the scandinavians wish to be regulated into submissiveness doesn't mean that we have to follow their example.

The Consequence: The Sun runs an exposé on Angles of Vanishing Stability by their guest columnist and Celebrity Big Brother 2006 winner Ellen Macgregor. Questions in the House. Prime Minister Blind Davy Flunkit introduces emergency legislation banning Flotilla sailing. The opposition, led by Anne Witheringthighs calls for French AWBs to be declared illegal. Sales of AWBs plummet while builders rush to scrub the grime off of moulds of anything designed by Van de Stadt, Holman and Pye, Sparkman and Stephens, Sonny and Cher, Peters and Lee, Maurice oh so Strange, etc.

The new aircraft carriers will be too wide to get into Prtsmouth .. oops Wind energy will be declared a mistake, nuclear power program invented and we will be invaded by the Chinese in the interests of world peace to get our Catholic schools checked for weapons of Mass Destruction (they're intelligence actually said that some mexican midgets were training to be priests). Cauliflowers will proliferate in the east coast mud, driving the MABMH to refuge in Northumberland, Plymouth with disover religion again ..and inflict toleration on all ... and thats just the fuckin' start!

In recent years all legislation aimed at taming the masses (i.e. us) has foundered because it costs too much to run. The accountants that run the country have had their come-uppance, ever since the poll tax. A triumph of authoritarianism over common sense if ever there was one. Just look at drink-driving and speeding. It costs too much to have coppers out catching errant drivers, so we have speed cameras and breath testing at accident sites. This means that if you speed between cameras and don't hit anything, and you are fine (not fined).

The same can be made to apply to boats. When was the last time anyone outside a Hamble marina had their VHF license inspected? Except by the French, who still maintain a government beaurocracy. The same goes for any other form of boat certification. Go on, when was the last time any of you lot got asked to produce your papers on the water?

We should encourage legislation that involves the inspection of minutiae, such as compulsory registration of all vessels over 3 metres. This ensures that the whole system will grind to a halt if they ever try and enforce it. All three political parties are of the same colour these days, so none will advocate spending more money on beurocracy (however you spell it) and we will be safe, while giving them the appearance of control, and us our freedom, as long as we don't hit anything.
