Anyone know anything about Johnson, sons and Jago ltd, Leigh on sea, essex?
I have recently purchased a 27 foot crusier called 'Carefree' built by this company and just would like to find out more about the boat, model and its builders.

Thanx

Alex

My Pop nearly bought one of these way back in the early sixties.

They did 2 versions, I believe. One short cabin and large cockpit and the other long cabin short cockpit.
Mahogany hull and super' and generally a Morris Vadette (minor) or Navigator petrol engines. I expect a lot have subsequently been changed to diesel.

Nicely proportioned boat, if a bit skinny by modern standards.

Book into the Thames Traditional Boat Rally on the weekend of 19/20th July. see the website for details. At least 2 similar boats usually attend, and even if they don't you will find someone to give you chapter and verse on this builder.

Thanks for your reply miket

I belive it had a 1600 austin healy engine in it prevoius to the bmc diesel 1500 in it now. It may have had a different engine previous to this though. the seacock has 'morris' on the lid. its the long cabin model if your right, although i have been told it is built of Iroko on oak. The superstructure has been replaced with ply mainly and fiberglass sheathed but some original mahogany remains such as the wheelhouse. When were they built?

Built in the 50's, and not aware that any had a "wheelhouse". I believe all were open with timber screen only.

Hi, Alex. I also have a Johnsons, Sons & Jago cruiser. She's a 25 ft long cabin, also with an added wheelhouse. (Although currently a floating shed whilst being very slowly!! rebuilt). She is moored across the Thames on Canvey Island. If you want to see how one of these should look, log into boatshed.co.uk and search johnson, sons & jago .
