Cruising to St. Petersburg

I'm planning to head to St. Petersburg via Sweden/Finland this summer, then back via the Baltic States to Gdansk.

Anyone have any experience/suggestions about the St. Petersburg/Baltic States/Poland part of the trip - ports that are interesting to visit, any likely problems, any tips that may make life easier etc.

Also, if anyone has any recentish charts of this part of the world they might want to sell, I'd be interested to know.

Try reading Griff Rhys Jones' book "To the Baltic with Bob".

Not much use as a practical pilot guide, but a damn entertaining read covering the very voyage you're planning.

The Cruising Association Millennium Cruise went to St Pete's. Consequently, CA has loads of info on the whole shooting match. If you're a member take advantage, if not some of their publications are for sale.

Thanks very much for this response and also to others for the replies below. I have PM'd you.

Since I'd just logged on as a new user, 'fraid I hadn't got round to creating a user profile. Relevant info about me is: my boat's a Contessa 32.

I'm fairly familiar with Russia, Baltic States and Poland from the land point of view, 'cos I lived in Russia for 7 years, now live in Krakow in southern Poland. I speak fluent Russian and bad Polish which I hope might help! And I'll have one or more Polish friends as crew on board. So I was after info from the point of view of nice places to visit, potential pitfalls, formalities, useful contacts etc. rather than, say, tourist info about St. Peterburg.

The CA publishes Cruising Information books on Sweden, Norway, Finland. They also hava a hrbour guide to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia which is bang up to date and a guide to laying up in the Baltic (The latest issue of this is due out soon)
They can also provide info on where to buy charts. However they will not be very helpful (apart from selling books etc. unless you join). It cost money to answer queries and the members have to pay for the advice you get.
I've been a member for some years and find the CA very useful. NB they have a Baltic Section which has a rally each year somewhere in the Baltic, give lectures etc. Obviously members of that section have a great deal of knowledge in areas in which you are interested.
