Over the weekend of August 17-18, the Cruising Association is holding a long distance cruising seminar for those planning to cross oceans. The event will be held at CA House

Saturday’s session, which begins at 09.30, covers topics like anchors, holding tanks, insurance (personal and boat), buying, preparing and storing food, healthcare, cruising ‘reality’ and passage planning in an electronic age. Saturday’s speakers include Vyv Cox, Jimmy Cornell and Paul Heiney.

Sunday is described as a ‘Rendezvous’, and starts at 1200 with drinks, followed by lunch. In the afternoon Tim Barker will recount tales of high winds, whales and ice, experienced when sailing his Oyster 485 from Buenos Aires to Antarctica via the Falklands and back to Tierra del Fuego.

The cost of Saturday’s seminar is £20 (members) or £45 (non-members) and includes the buffet lunch. Sunday’s event is £12 (members) or £25 (non members). Non-members joining the Cruising Association at the event will pay the member’s price.

CA House is close to Limehouse Station on the Docklands Light Railway at:

Hope it's of interest to some forumites.

Won't be attending as already away, albeit just in the Med for now. That said I know these talks are very worthwhile, learnt a huge amount at the ARC chats before crossing the pond. Provisioning for a crew of 5 based on potentially 3 weeks was daunting before listening to those in the know!

Hope it's a good turnout, invaluable information :)

More detail at http://www.cruising.org.uk/node/18678.

A course also relevant for people making longer passages is the Mast Climbing Course; (see http://www.cruising.org.uk/node/19857 ) down at Swanwick on 21st September.

Regional seminars are arranged for the Baltic and Mediterranean next winter as well. Typical comments from these are: "wish I'd joined and heard about these before we left UK" with loads of questions about batteries, charging systems, holding tanks and local mooring arrangements.

Talking of provisioning, the cold buffets provided by Agnieska in CA house are a delight. All you can eat, with a wide range of east European offerings. The meeting rooms there are open to non-members with an interest in boats - useful for private functions and meetings, and good value for London. See http://www.cruising.org.uk/public/room_hire
