Cruiser handicap-ratings...loads of 'em...

I found this very long list quite interesting, from my armchair...

Not sure how accurately representative the figures in red would be regarded as, by these yachts' owners. I was surprised...the Fisher 25 rates as fast as the Swift 18? But I suppose it's like comparing a motorhome with a Vespa. :)

Nice to see that he still updates the list. That's where we got our first handicap estimate for our Southerly 95 way back (prob. 1990s). We started on his figure of 1090 (still shown) and had it regularly increased until it levelled out at 1110 or thereabouts. So not a too bad as a first guess at the handicap.

It was a good source for odd "racing" boats even then.

That does sound improbably swift for the MacGregor. About the same as the Olympic 470.

I'd be interested to hear from cruisers who are cheered or dismayed by their boat's rating on this list.

Wouldnt bother with Byron now the RYA has issued their new handicap system. Easy to convert their numbers back into PY format if you want and there are loads of them.

I'm not sure if I'd have expected wildly different ratings for those boats...aren't the little Beneteaus quite perky performers? 1001 is around the same mark as a Contender dinghy isn't it? And the Hunter Liberty here rates about the same as a Laser 2...

...are you thinking these ratings are too generous, or not enough?

Why a surprise? Two-ton car is couple times faster than Vespa and much better to get around tight corners too.
Well, having a 'motor-sailer' with sail parameters higher than racers of her time, especially SA/D, and I though her undercanvassed, silly me :o
But sadly she is not included.
