I just received an "invitation" to renew my annual dues. 28 ft boat = £38.50.

Can anyone tell me what I get for my money?

Thank you

They supply all that nice brown water [not always quite enough:ambivalence:], and you get a wave from Robin occasionally.
Originally I seem to remember it was formed to stop the Whitstable Oyster Company flogging the river bed off for aggregates.

You get to pay for a harbourmaster having a nice office and running a bureaucracy…

I used to be a member of the Maldon Harbour board. It was run on the basis of having the absolute minimum paperwork and keeping the fees to a minimum. We used to charge the barges a fee based on number of paying passengers they took on trips. That was simple and kept the fees very low. But just enough to cover the buoyage.

CHC have to charge you harbour dues so they can operate a motor boat which allows them drive up and down the river checking harbour dues.
They say it pays for the buoys, but the buoys are funded by the commercial ships using Baltic Wharf and the stupid bird project.

The fees are calculated on an ability to pay approach. If you have a larger boat you can afford to pay more sort of approach. When they could reduce the fees by laying off the office staff and charging via the boatyards and marinas for the number of occupied berths. If they did that I suspect they could reduce the harbour charge from £50 to £10… But that would do away with the need for local Councillors having a meeting on harbour board and being able to claim expenses.
