Is there really a ceremony when you cross the equator? If so, what is it?

...... I bet you thought this was going to be an Eddie Izzard post /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Yes there is Pauline - King Neptune with his wife Queen Amphitrite, an evil looking barber, a evil looking surgeon, some guards + as many nymphs and bears which can be mustered board any vessel crossing the line.
Court is held - first bestowing awards on veterans of crossings then summon the offenders/novices, charges read, are dealt with by the barber and surgeon with plenty of lather and sharp looking cut throat razor - then dumped into a rigged up pool where the bears ensure the offender is dunked plenty of times, a certificate is then awarded for exemption for future crossings.

and dont expect there to be water in the pool, it is normally filled with something that would make even the most dedicated of smelly people rush of to the shower!!!!!!!!/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

my first time crossing the line (the second was coming back lol) was missed. Most upset when I brought it up in Hong Kong while sat in a cafe, I says to SWMBO I should have been dunked, tradition see, yes we flew but just the same.

At this point SWMBO took pity and threw the remainder of her water over me, now that is what I call generous and caring lol.

If you don't know, just say you don't know. There's no need to make up such a far fetched story .... you'll frighten the children

My Dad still has his father's 'crossing the line' cert' and a pretty ornate one at that. presented to him after a ceromony of the sort mentioned in your post, signed of course by "King Neptune" dated 1920s if I remember rightly. Mike
