Hi everyone,

I've been boating for a few years now but have never ventured more than a five or six miles off the coast and this summer would like to cross the channel with a few mates who are all comfitable handling my boat and have a rough idea of how the instruments work. I'm happy with paper charts and have chart plotter/VHF (fixed and handheld) but have never had any actual training, just picked up how to do things from talking to the lifeboat crew and other boaters at my boatyard over the last few years.

My boat is a 19ft Bayliner 135 hp inboard open top although I have a roof and a bow cover which I usually put on if theres more than a meter or so of swell. We've all taken four days off of work so we can wait for good weather if required at both ends.

I just wanted to check to see whether anyone else has done anything similar? Is it a totally crazy thing to do or should it be ok if it's taken seriously?

Thanks,

Ben
