Anyone else going? Getting quietly optimistic that the weather looks good with more high and less jet stream than recently. I have two weeks, departing Portsmouth sat 29/6 and back by say 13/7.

Likely to go down Solent on sat, anchor off Hurst and cross channel on sun, Mrs Chubby coming by ferry to Cherbourg on Monday then the world is our oyster but got to be somewhere to meet youngest daughter the middle weekend: Guernsey or Jersey by plane seems the best bet.

So shall we go down the west side of the Cherbourg peninsula: Dielete, Carteret, maybe Granville then swing over to a CI to meet youngest, or North Brittany? Then work backwards for the second week. East from Cherbourg is good but fewer options for meeting crew midway.

Anyone else going that way? keep an eye out for us. I don't mind anchoring but the girls like walk ashore and the prospect of some retail therapy

Chubby,

I don't know if you've been across the Channel before but 2 weeks goes quickly and doen't get one that far !

Even when we used to get summers I have spent a week in St Peter Port waiting for thick fog to clear, I would count myself lucky to get to St Helier & back in 2 weeks nowadays.

I always used to angle back from Guernsey to Salcombe ( minding tides at the exit from the Little Russel and entrance to the latter ) which usually works well.

I would definitely go for the West side of the Cotentin Peninsula, much nicer places to go; the thing to bear in mind is always work with the tides.

My usual crossing would be from Studland / the Needles to Guernsey, Alderney is a sparsely civilised pain, exposed to N E winds in an unpleasant way at best should these materialise.

Of course one likes ' sparsely civilised ' now and again but when it's a potential boat wrecker and life taker I can do without the stress on a 2 week holiday so would rather go past to Guernsey one way ( still not to be taken lightly ) or the other way the relatively gentle English West Country.

I'm going back a few years regarding Baie de Seine but the last time I did it the family stayed in Dives Sur Mer while I had to pop back for work. The coastal bus service was very good calling at all the harbour towns and the ferry terminal at Ouistreham. So there should be possibilities for meeting the family on that coast too. Looks like you might have picked the right dates. Have a good trip.

You might consider going to Granville from Cherbourg. Once there you have a good choice of destinations and an easy sail from any of them, to St Helier, to pick up your daughter.
Also think about meeting her in St Malo, from the fast ferry. This would be my favourite and would leave the way open for a return trip via ports in the Bay of St Malo and/or Jersey and Guernsey. A nice neat anti-clockwise circumnavigation.

Sounds like an Excellent Plan. I'm also hoping for 2 weeks of glorious sunshine and fair winds starting this coming weekend (June 29th) with ambitions to head west and south from Gosport.

Last year, we took our 2 weeks at the start of September and spent the first week stuck in the Solent. Not unpleasant but not what would have been achievable but for too much wind.

Let's hope this year is better!

You will need to get a shimmy on as HW Dover will be approaching mid afternoon (to go round the corner and down the race), which will give you a lateish arrival on a falling tide!
Better to arrive late at St PP, anchor in Havelet bay and go into marina when the sill allows next morning. Saving a nights fees sitting on the waiting pontoon and going in approaching midnight!
HW StPP Tue 2/7 is 01:05 & 13:43 UTC

We'll be heading that way early next month. Probably be in SPP sometime between the 8th and 12th.

We'll have to go into the Pool as too big for the marina (allegedly).

Our current plan is to set off from Chichester at around 0400 Sat. Maybe overnight in Alderney. Maybe carry on to St Peter Port. Then N Brittany or wherever, returning UK 15th (ish) of July. If you see us, come and say hello! (Cyclone of Langstone. Westerly Storm.).

Last year did St Vaast to Fecamp via Honfleur. Had most places to ourselves (might have been something to do with the weather!) but great sailing with no shortage of wind.

We've enjoyed all the places mentioned by the OP. But if the girls like retail therapy, keep well away from Deauville!!

Cheers, Rob

Rob,

I haven't looked at the tides but with your boat setting off at 04:00 St Peter Port should be easily within reach in daylight, if the wind angle plays ball !

For that reason I usually set off from the Needles or Studland.

Rather than anchor in Havelet bay I have sometimes waited in the outer harbour and gone into the marina around midnight / bleary 0'morning without waking up the crew, it just has to be done if the tides work that way and at least one can relax in the outer harbour, with taxi's ashore too.
