Can anyone explain the logic of CCF fares please? If I go and return on the same day, I can take a car and up to 5 peeps for £19. If I want to delay the return by 7days, the cost is upwards of £200. Same car, same peeps, same journeys, same service etc etc so why the enormous difference in cost? Same applies if I dont want to come back at all. Return £19, one way £100. Why?

It works on the well known market forces principle.if grasped by the gonads your heart and wallet will surely follow.
I suspect that its going to get worse as the onboard prices of fags and booze have gone up due to French tax rises less people are buying so the ferries have lost another profit source.
Ryan air et al are also putting pressure on the ferries.
Any way damn the expense I'm tunneling tomorrow,a points plus freebie.

Why don't you book 2 one day returns, 1 for the day you wish to travel, and the other for the day you return, Thus costing £38 instead of £200./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Cos it would end up costing you two singles. Seriously they say if you buy a day return and do'nt return they will track you down (they've got your credit card details) and charge the extra cost of a single. Trust me I'm an expert on the Cherbourg ferry fares after this winter.

Of course, you had it easy........

If it's any consolation, Portsmouth - St Malo outbound and Cherbourg - Poole coming back (don't ask................) in August is about £400. Admittedly that includes a 4 berth cabin overnight for the St Malo trip, but the ferry companies have a tighter grip on the gonads of the parents of schoolage children than on any other socio-economic group /forums/images/icons/frown.gif.

Jimi is right about their response to anybody using one part of a cheap return ticket. Gits!

Spotted along those lines in their Ts&Cs. Do they just say it (scaring timid souls like me into submission) or do they actually check and chase?

I think when you arrive at the return check in the computer looks at the reg # then all hell breaks loose....... You did not use the return last time etc etc £200 please.

Same happens if you use different co. or routes. They see a leg not used and get you.

This does not happen with airlines as I did it recently.

That's market forces for you! I, for one, am using an apex ticket this weekend and beating the chancellor by buying all my summer booze in France. It costs £30 rtn and I get 4 bottles of plonk free. I will save that on a decent half case of wine. We all know that this is the best option even with increases over the channel. (It is also a lot cheaper than the £400 of petrol the boat would use!

At least I will get some sailing in this weekend even if it is on a Sea France ferry.

Cheers

Paul

Only appears to works if you are a foot passenger and paying cash, if you take the car or pay by card they have got you, believe me I know many that have tried to work round it and failed, some have tried coming back on different routes and different operators and still been caught.

You can get away with it in a car. You have to book it through a travel agent and pay by cash, also when you book it you will not be sure what car you are taking and will have to give them the number plate another time.

The return journey is easer because prices are cheeper the other side of the channel.

It worked in the past

norfolkline are pretty cheap, & very accomodating with changes of plans/delays. A bit no-frills, but good ; we've used them loads of times travelling to look at boats in holland.

There's often a £99 for car+5 "open" return offer.

I've been asked to show that the vehicle was not carrying luggage as they didn't believe I was only going on a day trip. According to their computer I hadn't returned from my previous trip!!

OK, since it turns out that you're all as corrupt as me. Buy the Shuttle breakdown policy at the terminal for £8. 'Phone them the evening you are supposed to be going back and tell them you have a problem with the car, don't say what the problem is because you don't want to lie. THE POLICY COVERS THE COST OF THE DELAYED RETURN! And you don't need to feel too guilty because they are insuring themselves on that bit.

Now get you car serviced over there, which you should anyway because it's miles cheaper. And you have documentary proof that the car needed work.

Claiming for the cost of the service would be taking the p*ss, and would get us a bad name.
