I bought an extra 40m of 8mm calibrated chain to connect to the chain that came with my boat (30m). In the Bristol channel there is a fair tidal range. I also bought a Crosby 8mm G335 chain replacement link which turns out not to fit the chain! I totally admit to not checking the dimensions completely and so have no beef with the suppliers but I thought I'd mention it in case anybody is thinking of doing the same.

Anybody know where I can get a Crosby type connector that will fit grade 40 8mm chain or something similar to go though the gypsy?

Short answer is that you can not. The Crosby link is made to a different standard from metric chain. It is sometimes the case that the link is not a perfect fit and either a small amount of filing or squeezing in a vice is necessary to get the link to articulate properly.

So, does that mean it would be OK to shave a small amount off the link to make it fit? My concern is that it will weaken the link.

Vyv you'd know. Would it be better to have a link welded in rather than using the Crosby link and cold galv the local area to the repair.

I know of many people who have filed or ground a small relief to the C-link. It is hardened and tempered, so filing might be hard work. I think there is adequate strength there even with a small amount taken off. First of all I would squeeze the last links in the chains to be joined in a vice lengthways, to open up the hole a little. It won't do any harm so far as strength or passing through the windlass is concerned and if it goes horribly wrong just cut the link(s) off.

I would not weld an additional link, too many unknowns with that approach. You will never find a welder who will admit that he might not have the skills, equipment or knowledge to do it but they will always take the work..

I shall give it ago this evening. If I fail I think I might make a trip up to William Hatchet and get them to weld it as they are the chain experts.

Many thanks for your advise - it is very much appreciated.
