We are back in Croatia so checked with the Marina Manager and Harbour Master what the Sojourn Tax rates for people staying on a yacht are for 2019. The rates have been reduced a little from those originally planned a couple of years ago, but they are still roughly three times the 2017 rates.

For our boat in the 9m - 12m range the rates in Kuna are:

up to 3 days 150
up to 8 days 350
up to 15 days 600
up to 30 days 1000
up to 90 days 2350
up to 1 year 3000

Roughly 9 Kuna to the Pound at the moment.

The full rates for all boats are here: https://www.marina-punat.hr/news/sojourn-tax-changes-for-2019/1611

On top of these rates, the annual Vignette must also be bought but that is only around £50 for the year.

Ours at 12.5m are even more unreasonable.

"Wonderful"... Suppose they made a statistics that 99% of the local boats are <9m, while 80% of the foreigners is 9.9m.

Ours at 12.5m are even more unreasonable.

We're in the early stages of boat buying (saving up and research still, but a cautiously realistic 12-24m timeline for taking possession). This, marina berth pricing bands and Greek taxes (amongst other things) are very much pushing us to the 11.5-11.99m bracket even though we would love a bigger boat...

If your not plainning to be full time liveaboard, stick to a boat below 12 mts , you save a packet in no time , us full timers carry lots of stuff so we need a bigger boat , tho I do know some full time liveaboard who manage nicely on <12 mts

The plan is to take a "seabattical" (as much as I hate that word!) and liveaboard for ~8m stretch in a couple of years' time, but otherwise will just be holidays and just us two. I'm used to living in a flat in London and hubby is a submariner so we're not too bad with limited space; especially when faced with so much expense to go over the magic 12m!

Then perhaps have a look at an Oceanis 393 which comes in at 11,98m .... they were still a bit too expensive when I bought my Bav in 2011 ....

Yep, it's one that features on our (slightly dull!) spreadsheet of 11.5-11.99m boats, also including some "fat bottomed" ones to make up for length with a chunky beam :p Preferred so far (purely on paper at this stage) is the Elan Impression 384. Shorter LOA but longer LWL...chartering one in September so we will see how that feels for a week's extended test drive.

Have sailed an Oceanis 34. Liked the spec/feel but definitely too small for more than a holiday, so the 393 is a contender too :)

Having now entirely hijacked this thread with our boat-buying dreams...Richard is Punat your current marina? We are looking at it as a contender for our home berth when we buy (subject to availability etc). We are staying in Krk for a night in June before another sailing trip (also chartering in June as well as September) and planning to pop into Punat for a nosy...

I just used the Punat tables because they are laid out clearly.

At one point, I did think of moving from Marina Kremik (Primosten) where we have been for the last 5 years to Punat but I'm not sure about the weather in that part of Croatia. It often seems to us, further south, that that part of the coast suffers from rather a lot of very high winds, the Bora in particular. It's probably fine in July and August but they are the two months that we try and avoid because it gets so busy then.

Although Punat marina is probably very sheltered, that doesn't help much it it's blowing 50 knots just outside the entrance.

We need an independent source to advise us how many sailing days are lost each month because of winds say BF6 or above.

I've been on the waiting list for the "basic" berths in Punat for about 3 years, fancied a bit of a change. Keep getting offers for "premium" berths, so you shouldn't have a problem ... prices are here:

https://www.marina-punat.hr/berths-for-vessels/premium-berths/363

Seem to be the going rate for a marina with this level of facilities.

Thanks Richard, that's interesting to note and not something we have hugely considered - we'll not have sailed that far north until our September trip having mainly been from bases only as far north as Sibenik as far as Croatia goes. My preferred location for a marina would be somewhere between Sibenik and Dubrovnik but when factoring in costs and availability we might have to take what we can get for a season or two...

Thanks :) We had a look at that, the basic offering seems fine but if premium is all they have then we might have to make do. I always wonder if it's like [unborn] kids and schools; can I join a waiting list with a boat I don't have?! If we get offered a spot and don't have a boat yet do we go to the back of the list or sit at the top? Never did get to the bottom of that yet.

And more worryingly, what happens if you buy a boat and can't find anywhere to put it?! I don't want to pay for an empty berth in anticipation but equally don't want to be stuck! (Only half joking here...!)

My berth is in Punat (last 11 years...).
So any questions... please...

:) Hi Alexsailor. I guess like Richard mentioned - do you have any issues with the sailing conditions such as the bora, particularly in "shoulder" season? Do you find the proactive monitoring of the boat useful? And do you bother to have the boat hauled out for the winter or keep it in the water at Punat? :encouragement:

Hi Bellacruiser,

Punat is all or mostly about Bora (NE; brings sun) and Jugo (SE; brings rain).
Check it out: https://www.windguru.cz/75030

Bora is strong here. But it is manageable. Punat is well protected (not much or no waves). It looks like a lake.
You just have to get used to it. That is all.
All the berths are positioned so that you get the blow from starboard or port side. So it is.
But marina stuff is helpful.

In winter there is a lot of rain and even stronger Bora.

Proactive monitoring- I believe it is something Marina Punat is offering and what a son of the owner developed. I do not use it. Why should I? They keep an eye on the boats (covers, waterline:) etc). And you get weekly a picture of the boat. No problems so far.
I do keep my boat in the water all the time as I do sail also in winter (except January and February which are by my observation the worst).

Basic mooring in only in one pier and it is full. What they are offering is "premium berth" that is by my opinion regular berth. Basic has no car parking in the marina in and it takes some walking on the pier. So that is much the difference.

Use google maps and the map of the marina and locate your offered berth. It depends of the length of the boat where you'll be. Most of the piers are really close so you don't want that.

Marina developed and grew (the new large piers on the north part) in the last four years. I find that a pity since is by my opinion overcrowded. Specially in the summer.

That’s really helpful, thank you :) We’re going to check out Punat and maybe Mitan Marina when we are passing through in 3 weeks.

Just preliminary research but we will be in the area with a car so can take a look

Novi Vinodolski - Mitan marina. That is just below Velebit mountains and near Senj- where the strongest gusts of Bora are.
Forget it, if I may say so.

Maybe check marina in Cres town on Cres island.

*maybe administrator should move this “Punat” thing in a new thread

My boat has been in Pula (Marina Veruda) for about 8 years - it's fine and well protected .... probably a bit too far north for you but the only time I have been storm-bound was in Kukljica on Uglian in 2009, and I was driven to seek shelter in Supetarska Draga once ... strangely enough, my experience has been, the further away from the mainland you get, the less violent the winds ..... the Velebit channel is particularly bad as it really gets funnelled down there.

When I was looking for my berth I wanted to be north because I drive to the boat. I started in Umag and drove all the way to Pula visiting every marina in between and there was nothing until I got to Pula ... so don't hang about.

July and August are crowded and it gets worse the further south you go. The northern outer islands are usually fine, need to be in early for Mali Losinj but otherwise I've never been turned away.

Happy hunting :encouragement:

Been in punat for last 15 years
Live on the dry dock near new toilet block
Every year say will move but for facilities easy to town
Swimming pool
Free taxi to airport easy drive from uk
Not the cheapest but suits us well
Prefer the north
Less busy
Weather can occasionally be an issue but have had
Really bad weather further south as well

We'd be flying every time so key for us would be frequent/cheap flights ideally from Stansted (by far cheapest and easiest for us to get to) and not too faffy to get to the marina when we land. We're actually flying into Pula in 3 weeks though (driving down to Sibenik for our charter over the course of a week). Will be the first time in Pula/Rovinj/Rijeka and so on so will see how we like it!

That's good to hear - yes definitely can be bad weather further south anyway, we caught some really bad weather sailing from Dubrovnik one September!
