I am thinking about sailing to Croatia. I have never been there before, but a number of people speak highly of it and it would make a sensible final destination to overwinter at the end of the season. It will also allow us to reset our 18 month VAT clock being outside the EU, for now.

The plan would be to leave Sardinia in May, then sail the west coat of Italy and then round the corner to the Ionian Greek Islands. Then head north to Croatia early August and spend the next few months exploring before the end of the season.

A big benefit would be wintering in a marina that isn't closed for 7 months of the year as is our present location in Sardinia! I cannot go through another winter without a decent chandlers and access to the usual boating services. Oh and reasonable flight connections would be a bonus.

I read this report on Noonsite - http://www.noonsite.com/Members/sue/R2011-10-22-2 - and wondered if anyone had any comments or advice regarding Croatia?

We've been to Croatia a few times on bareboat charters. It's a lovely place with some great sailing and places to visit but the last twice the costs have gone through the roof and we'll think very hard before going again.
Whilst you're obviously planning a different sort of trip, off the top of my head one night in Korcula Town Marina for a 36footer was almost £70 and many of the town quays with basic facilities were £30-40 per night. There are, of course, plenty of free anchorages and still places where you can tie up on the understanding you have a meal or at least [several] beers.

Second what Whiskey Bravo says - nice place, with some good sailing, but increasingly pricey recently. That applies to everything, not just berthing but also food whether restaurant or supermarket.

Do a search in these forums; much been said about Croatia. The gist of which is: beautiful islands, expensive marinas, rip-off mentality, dour people (my opinion).
If you're looking for somewhere with an airport, that means Split, Dubrovnik (both of which with limited winter flights) or somewhere in Istria with access to Trieste airport (daily flights to London etc). If you're looking for a cheaper option for over-wintering, come to Italy and specifically Monfalcone. Great yards but little in the way of liveaboard community.

Go to this page for a general picture of Adriatic Cruising:

http://www.jimbsail.info/drupal/mediterranean/adriatic

Then, for more detail, check out the /N Croatia and /S Croatia pages (reached through the right hand menu on the first page). Written with the modifying influence of several forumites!

Of course, before you accept any of this stuff, it's worth checking out places you already know and what the site says about those. Sardinia? listed under W Mediterranean.

Jimb: small point: you mention Slovakia as a cruising destination... :) Although underneath, it does mention Slovenia!
The Croatia map has some minor spelling errors too: Dubrovnik, Rovinj.
Hope you don't mind but it detracts from a useful page!

Don't mind at all! Many thanks . . . bit difficult to reach Slovakia from the sea!

If you log in as a site member, you could write such comments in below the text - and suggest changes I never would have imagined.

Once I've got the whole site up and running (next summer?) I'll be looking for volunteer editors to help me keep it up to date. Now, you're an expert on the Adriatic . . .

Hey, that would be great!

Until I've sorted and tested all the author permissions and edit permissions (done by next summer) we'll have to be content with you posting wise comments on the various pages. After then, I'll be giving selected experts edit permission for "their" pages.

Any more volunteers?

Thanks for the information everyone.

I'm not sure about Croatia now. Part of the problem is that it's "up a dead end" which means a long trek to a decent winter destination.

I may just stay around Sardinia and Corsica, bobbing over to Tunisia for VAT purposes and then head back to Palma for the winter.
