I know that it's a subject that has been covered before, but I'm booking a week's holiday tomorrow, and still can't decide whether to sail in Croatia or Turkey. I know nothing about Croatia really, but am a bit fed up with the sheer amount of awbs that clutter up the Eastern Med in the summer. I was hoping, possibly foolishly, that Croatia isn't quite as saturated yet? As always, any tips gratefully received.

We had a great time in Croatia last June - not crowded in most places but fairly expensive compared to Greece (not been to Turkey yet). You have to remember that its not long since they were a communist state and you can't hurry the paperwork!
The food and the people were fantastic.

CROATIA is most beautiful in June as there are no so many visitor and everything is working and restaurants are ready for season. So, if you decide to go here, you will enjoy. Where to go? I am sailing 40 years in this waters and there is a places where I have not been!
But I believe that Turkey is also nice in June - so you have difficult decision!

I'm from Croatia, I've never been to Turkey but I can say my country is beautiful, but I admit it is more expensive than Turkey. There are lots of places to go, lots of ilands to visit...

I'm going sailing in Split on 21-24 May. So Branko and Ante, if you can give sone advice, that would be most welcome.

1) Route
I'm sailing with my new girlfriend, and it will be her first sailing holiday on a yacht. we chartered an Elan 333. I don't want to do many miles, just some short day sails. I don't want to overdose here, and also I will be shorthanded. Max 4-5 hours of sail from destination to destination.

2) Anchoring
Any things I should know? What is the ground like ? Sand? Pebbles? Rocks?

3) Mooring
What type of mooring is used in the marinas? Med-type mooring?

4) Prices
What are marina prices like.

We went last week of May and first week of June last year.

Week One - Cold and Wet, Week Two - Sunny and hot, but winds didn't pick up until late in the day.

Great place, would go back anytime.

Restuarant menus were a bit limited though, except in SPlit where there are lots of them.

If you are with new girlfriend why you go anywhere ..... but from Split nice trip is as follows: 1. day Bay Necujam on Island Solta ( anchoring in one of the most beautifull bays -underwater ruins) 2.day Milna -small town on Island Brac - well protected bay with Marina ACY -price for your boat approx. 30 EUR. 3. and 4. day Palmizana (Acy Marina ) on Pakleni otoci near Hvar something special - go with girl in Restaurant Dagmar Meneghello and order GREGADA (fish, lobster and potatos cooked on open fire). From Palmizana you can next day visit Hvar(must!).
5. day Go back around Hvar over Hvarski canal in the middle of Island Brac where you can anchor on famous Zlatni rat ( Golden reef) beach - do not sleep here as it is not protected . For sleeping go back on Island Hvar in Vrboska vis a vis Zlatni rat(marina ACY). From Vrboska you can stop one day in bay Bobovisce -Island Brac( buoys and free anchoring) .
Berths in all marinas have laid moorings and you can go bow or stern to .
Prices in Marinas for Elan 333 are about 30EUR, on buoys where are available price is about 15EUR and in ports are less then 10EURos.
Enjoy and have a good weather and time. Daily routes are short and you can always run away in some protected marina if weather will be bad.
When you see everything from my schedule you must know that you saw 1/1000 of Croatian coast!

We chartered from Dubrovnik last year - great time. Lots of places to anchor in the islands going north - and don't ignore some good small places on the mainland. Most waterside restaurants will let you moor free if you eat at their restaurant and lots have lazy lines out so no worries about the anchor with stern-to mooring. The water can be a bit cold for swimming compared with other parts of the Med. Food generally good and reasonably priced - wine generally very poor and very overpriced.
