This is a very free and easy forum which people benefit from in lots of ways.

You get the one off technical enquiry ie how do I connect my Furuno dishwasher to my Electrolux ice maker via the GPS.Very often after several forumites take the trouble to assist them they sort out their problem and are never heard of again.

You get Lurkers who read all and contribute nothing.

You get a hard core of posters who keep the forum alive by continual contributions.

Lately I have seen on a few occasions snide remarks creeping in about prolific posters .I think this is a blood$ cheek. We all know that you have to take the wheat with the chaffe and accept some of it is written with tongue in cheek BUT without the regular posters this forum would wither and die.

I have been on here from the very first days of the forums (The 35 th person to sign up),I think its been taken down at least twice due to abusers and is now IMHO a great source of information and entertainment.

Only 3865 posts in all that time? Call that prolific?

I was only looking at my first post yesterday, as I took a print of it at the time. It was to do with replacing headlining (in my case on my Jouet 680). I found it in my old restoration file. Anorak, moi?
Having done the job, I have since been prolific on that subject, whatever prolific means.
I have been snided a few times, which is a sign of prolifism. Or maybe Iam just a total prat, which is far more likely.
Wait till I reach 5000, then I am going for a punch up with one of the seniors. I am only a measly 34th in the all time posters list.

Vive Les Prolifics!!

I agree wholeheartedly that we are indebted to the regular posters for the information and entertainment provided. And I also deplore snide remarks such as ". . . and the sailing connection is?"

Both Scuttlebutt and the other place (I mean PBO) have a generally supportive ethos, avoiding personal abuse and maintaining a respect for the right of others to hold contrary opinions.

But even the great Scuttlebutt denizens are human, and some have been known to submit contributions after, erm, a good dinner. No-one is above criticism if he or she resorts to heavy-handed dismissal of other contributions, racist remarks or bullying.

What I respect most in the members of this online community is an ability to take fair criticism on the chin.

I am never sure what to think as on the one hand SWMBO thinks I must be on my 10k'th post by now and I think I am fairly regular but I try to only post when I (foolishly) think I have something to contribute or in a fit of pique when I see disinformation appearing.

Yet I am still not at 3k posts.

I am always glad when someone appreciates what I write...

I also note there is a sort of running total of people whose posts are repeated in the magazines. Some people seem to appear lots.

Moi - twice only in YM. Perhaps I am even more boring than I thought I was.

I haven't got anyone on 'ignore' - but I don't read some threads all the way through...

Absolutely agree with all the above - a great forum kept alive by the members.

There was a post earlier about 'how much oil does my engine take as I'm not at the boat and need to buy the oil' - 5 responses in 15 minutes and the problem is solved - probabaly quicker than getting the manual out and looking! That sort of help and the advice so many, including myself, seek on obscure topics is priceless. You could spend weeks talking to many different people trying to find out how the NMEA sentance of a Raymarine GPS needs to be configured to talk to a discontinued GPS repeater (for example!), yet on here it would take a matter of minutes to tap into thousands of people's generations of accumulated knowledge!

I don't understand why some people whinge about odd posts - the banter is all part of the fun!!

There's too many buggers who just post for the sake of it on here. They should only ask relevant questions after they have exhausted the interwebnetwork and the local library.
And as for those who just post rubbish and tittilating pictures and attempts at "humour" ----well--- words fail me.

Some people come on here and treat it as a big playground, not realising what a serious business boating is.

Wholeheartedly agree that without prolific posters a forum will die.
As a newbie to boating and this forum I cannot stress how helpful I have found it, as others have said, replies to obscure questions in minutes.
The depth of knowledge freely shared by like minded individuals is an invaluable commodity and one that should be nurtured not stifled.
It is very easy for a forum to die, without new posts people will not come back and yes you do have to suffer posts that are off topic or not relevant, but just skip them.
Its a great forum certainly the best supported I have come across, long may it continue /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

From "Self appointed on behalf of the lurkers"

Not sure what you are saying. So the easy bit is that genuinely invaluable advice is available on these boards. There is not much for free in this world so that has to be appreciated.

The second thing I would say is that those that contribute do deserve to be cut some slack. So that is the easy bit.

Now at what point does cutting slack become no longer beyond reproach. There have definitely been examples where opinion gets mixed up with fact. Should that always be excused because the author contributes?

Back to being nice though you did refer to snide comments. That does seem inappropriate. However, the fact I contribute massively less should not stop me countering something I feel is wrong, or even misguided.

I guess every artist needs an audience, even if they bite back!
