There are crimping pliers that are specifically aimed at insulated heat shrink crimps as opposed to standard insulated crimps. Are they necessary?

Ive just done a few butt joints on 2.5mm wires using glue/heat shrink crimps and my ancient standard crimpers were fine - at least the wires stood up to a good pull afterwards

The crimping tool for heat shrink crimps is slightly different to standard insulated crimps, it has flat dies that won't damage the heat shrink. In reality, normal crimping pliers will work fine.

I found my 'normal' ratchet crimpers cut into the heat shrink material. I bought some proper ratchet heat shrink crimpers and they work perfectly.

I bought a pair of heavy duty ratchet crimpers from asap last week, and they do the job on heat shrink crimps fine. £28
