Hello All,

Has anyone used Crewseekers (or any of the other 'crewfinders' sites)?
I'm a new convert to sailing (hooked already) and need experience! Am I likely to find many owners looking for crew? Any pitfalls to look out for?

SWMBO and I did competent crew course, got hooked, and used Crewseekers for a year before getting our own boat. Did Round the Island (twice! - thankyou Terry and Jolien) and lots of Solent and South Coast sailing via Crewseekers; and made some great friends into the bargain.
Highly recommended for the small outlay you make to register. Go for it!!

Gazza,

You have not put any details on your profile so I do not know where you are based?
There are many boat owners looking for crew but it does depend on your ability to be able to be where the boat is?
If you are available to sailors on a reliable basis they will very happy and in most cases will not cost you anything other than sharing the berthing costs overnight but they will not be happy if you are not serious about it all.
Regards.

Peter.

Many owners get pissed off with people doing a couple of weekends training then looking to trained for free by skippers found on crewseekers. There is no other sport where this is either practicable or acceptable, try golf or tennis. Go out and become a genuinely competent crew by sailing with the better sailing shools and then use the agencies. Your sailing development will be much more fullfilling, more fun and faster. The decent schools don't cost much per w/e when you think what you get for your money. Then you have something to offer.

But doris "a couple of weekends' training" is called RYA Competent Crew. Sailing school courses above that level are either focused on skippering or racing. There isn't a "Very Competent Crew" course or training programme available.

I would have thought that the courses aimed at racing are exactly how to learn to sail quickly, in more ways than one. After all that is where you are expected to know what you are doing. When I worked as an instructor, admittedly 10 years ago, there were frequently people who wanted to become seriously competent but who were not simply chasing the RYA stickers.
