Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can help or offer any advice on crewing for both motor and sailing boats. We are a couple looking to do some boating next year.

Does anyone know the best courses and experience needed for both sailing and motor boats? We don't want to crew on massive yaughts but maybe smaller family boats and maybe some deliveries. Any help would be really good. We don't mind spending some money on a course or two but not too sure which courses will be best to take.

Thanks for your time!

Tom

Well said.

In answer to the original question, there is a healthy crewing frorum on here which is probably a good place to start.

Spelling doesn't matter on the forum, unless you are a very high up in IPC towers and it is funny.

Anyway, you tell us very little about yourselves, so we can assume you have no qualifications at all. In that case, I think you have to start at the beginning and do your Power Boat Level 2.

Your first port of call is the RYA website.
Try this page for starters.

'Yeh hi' it would be nice to see an improvement in grammar . /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

NOT

When I first joined the forum it would take ages typing, checking and posting, now I just type away and make loads of petty spellings and I thank everyone for their tolerance, the more spelling hick ups I see the more relaxed I feel about posting here.

best crewing opportunities are by joining small boat clubs and making sure you are in the bar every Friday night.

If you say which part of the country you are from you may get some recommendations of clubs to join.

Not sure PB2 is much good for a Mobo.

I stand to be corrected by such a venerated boater as yourself, but I took my Power Boat Level 2 before setting sail in my MOBO and the guy did ask, "Does anyone know the best courses and experience needed for both sailing and motor boats? "

Hi Tom and welcome. We are often looking for crew to assist in deliveries and some contributers to this forum have been used by us. You don't say where you are based. We only deal with motorboats - nothing to do with boats with flappy white bits and lengths of string. We have nothing against them, just stick to what we know best!

In terms of training, a lot depends on what sort of boat you are looking to crew/learn on. While the Powerboat Level 2 course is fine for small boats - up to 10 meters - I would suggest that you start off with the 2 days RYA Helmsman course. This is a good introduction into handling the bigger motor cruisers and will also stand you in good stead in terms of crewing ability.

If you want anymore information then send me a PM

Hey Soli!
If yer wants a boat delivered up ere , gis a shout.
I know where all the shallow bits are cos I,ve hit most of em!

Hey Hadyn! The Major needs a Flag thinghy, see to it Please. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Major! How do You set sail in a Mobo? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hey tdyr82! dunna wurry about spelling there are some good uns on ere.

On a more serious note (don't do that kinda stuff often) as DAKA said get down the boat club and put Yourself about.
Definately do a course or two.
The peeps that might want some Crew would be more likely to have You aboard if You have some Qualls.

Don't know anything about sailing a Yacht (spelling any 1)? so can't comment on that score.

Personally if someone wanted to Crew with Me as opposed to accompany Me or to help on a decent voyage, let's say a 70 mile trip or summat, I would like to think that the Bod had some experience or had at least been on a Course which would have drilled in safety aboard and some First Aid Knowledge etc etc.
Great idea to gain experience by Crewing and maybe to see what kinda boat yer might want.
Don't know what level of skills about boats You have.
What I am trying to say (I'll get there just now) is that Crew is no good unless it Knows what it is doing.
Else yer a Passenger! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You are being modest as you have knocked the tops off most of the rocks, making them safer for other boaters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
