Hi All,

I have a 49ft yacht that will be sailing from North Carolina to Gib at the end of April 2012. The yacht is in very good order and has all the safety gear you would expect. We have a full compliment of professional crew, and the Skipper is extremely experienced (over 30 Trans Atlantics).

There is an opportunity for one additional person to join the vessel - a great mile builder or Ocean qualifier...

The trip is likely to take around 4 weeks (however flexibility on timings is essential).

The additional person would be expected to provide their own transport to and from the vessel, and contribute £7.50 per day towards food costs.

If you are interested then please reply by email (or pm) with a summary of your current sailing experience and qualifications.

Many thanks,

Pete

Oh come on the poor guy is only asking for £7.50 regardless, coded or not
what a trip that would be for someone who is not pedantic!

could we assume that this vessel is coded? you want a crew but expect them to contribute to food costs for a trip that you are charging for sounds as if it could be called a charter!!!

i think you will find this is a commercial delivery company and as such will be charging the client for this trip. nice if you can get free volenteers to come on a trip you charge for and then get them to pay for their transport and food which he will be presumably charging the client for. any RYA tuition going on on the trip as a 'mile builder' then the boat will need to be coded!! simple. If you have a delivery company moving boats and you use crew who pay their own way on a trip then it could easily be called a charter. in any event the crew would need to make sure that the boat was up to a good standard and carring the required saftey equipment for the trip, and as you are expected to get youreself to the boat in N Carolina at your own expense and discover that it is a old S****er and you dont leave with it you have the expenses of getting home again. Any boat that i would think of doing that trip on would need to be in really good condition.

delivery companies should pay crew and cover their expenses as it is a commercial trip full stop in my view and not use people who effectivly pay them to do the trip. What would you expect to eat for £7.50 per day it clearly wont be a lot! maybe they should sell it as a diet programme. Pedantic i think not reallistic is probably more like it

Couldn't agree more...... I never expect crew to contribute.

As already stated, we have a full compliment of crew for this delivery. Your assumption that we will charge the client for an additional person is incorrect.

In my opinion any good Skipper will offer training and expertise to their crew - be it private or commercial sailing. I consider crew development to be an essential part of our deliveries. Naturally a trip of any length will provide more miles and experience to the crew on board. A yacht hosting tuition and mile building clearly does not need to be coded.

To suggest that a contribution towards food of 7.50 per day "could easily be called a charter" is very bizarre indeed.

We have never and would never charge a client for the costs paid by an additional crew member

The additional person helps to create a more relaxing watch system for the original team. Our benefit is that we will hopefully gain a reliable crew member who will subsequently be offered countless deliveries with all their expenses covered.

We have had a very positive uptake and have now selected someone for the trip. Many thanks for all the pm's sent.

I think that you need to look at this somewhat more carefully as it is a commercial venture the boat needs to meet minimum standards ie coded in this case to CAT 0 i should think. As you are taking a additional crew member along and taking money from them even just for food it is a commercial enterprise and as such the passenger is entitled to reasurance that the boat meets the requirments. You are charging them simple as that!!! even if it not for profit money changes hands!!

There used to be a guy advertise on here who organised deliveries for profit and then made prospective crew pay for the pleasure of working for him. I was always totally against that as it was shear profiteering.
Halcyon are not that guy.
I have crewed for Halcyon and had all my expenses paid and have had an excellent experience with them. In addition one of the crew members on board was the 'additional' crew and as such had to pay his own food and travel costs. believe me when i say that he enjoyed it.
These were minimal and no more then I would expect anyone I invited on my own boat to contribute, in fact they were in all probability less than what I would expect from a guest!
It's wrong to think that paying for your food is a 'charge' for the voyage! It's simply paying your way and as such is a great way to get some on the water time at rock bottom cost.
I'd happily crew for you if you were happy to pay all my costs etc!... when do you want me to start??
In all honesty this is a great facility that is mutually beneficial to all involved and should be encouraged in this form rather than the profiteering mentioned above!
Incidently I think you may be wrong in thinking paying 'reasonable' expenses makes it a commercial passenger operation.

In fact I had a conversation about this subject with someone based in Southampton just few days ago when inquiring about another matter and should you accept monies even as not for profit this then type of arrangement becomes commercialas in hire and reward which equals boat is a charter and should be coded.

I see no problem with what Halcyon are doing (I have no link to them BTW) and I think SCEJ that you are being just a bit too agressive. Did you lose a job to them at some stage?:D

I have no connection to them and have never lost a job to them. My issue is that as a commercial enterprise they should pay crew if they don't want to pay and people go as 'crew' then their costs should be covered. If they contribute to running costs inc food then they are paying to be on board and it then becomes a commercial venture and boats should be coded.

People on these forums have had a go at reliance deliveries and hot liquid most recently and yet we still have people advertising fir mile building trips where they pay to go on a non commercial craft on a delivery. Lets call it what it is a commercial delivery where people pay to crew therefore simply put a charter so the boat should be coded simple as that.

Scej, it must be a whole heap of fun sailing with you eh?

From what i can see:

a) you r bang out of order comparing hakcyon to reliance or hot liquid, and

b) you clearly haven't read or digested or understood the basis fir this one extra person.

Bless you.

Those comments and the others further on seem somewhat strange to me since you said something different on this other thread about deliveries http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=297458&page=5 I highlighted the bit about food just in case you miss it.
as i understand it boats on delivery do not need to be coded. however if somebody pays for a berth on the delivery trip then yes it does need to be coded as it becomes a commercial trip. what you determine by paying is a little bit of a grey area it seems and my interpretation of it is if you contribute to the running cost of the boat whilst on delivery then it is commercial and therefore needs coding, contributing to the running cost would be any expense relating to the boat such as fuel, marina fees etc but it seems not food.

As I suggested on that thread maybe those who seem confused should ring the MCA coding department on 023808396400. They are very helpful.
