Hi, i am German and sailing this year around the south Coast of England to the Irisch Sea. I decided to chance the crew in Porthmouth or around. Where do i find the best Harbour/Marina near a (train)Station to get to London.

Thanks for help.

Andreas, SY Slisand

Gosport is across the water from Portsmouth and has 3 marinas. You can take a short ferry ride across to Portsmouth Hard where there is a railway station with direct trains to London.

Gunwharf Quays in the centre of Portsmouth is close to the station on the main line from London. It is a short stay marina so you may need to book. The marinas at the Hamble are close to Hamble station, but this is a branch line so not direct from London. Other alternatives are Southampton, 2 marinas walking distance (for fit people!0 from the mainline station. Further west Lymington, also a branch line, but frequent service to mainline at Brockenhurst or Poole.

The shuttle bus from the station to the Town Quay is free and runs regularly.

If you're getting a train to/from London, the Waterloo to Southampton line is expensive all the time, as is the Waterloo to Portsmouth line. It's possible to get a cheap (but slower) train from Victoria to Portsmouth or a National Express coach isn't much slower and usually miles cheaper from Victoria to both Southampton and Portsmouth, but they don't always run on time.

Not owning a car I'm rather well qualified to comment on solent marinas with train access to London and my vote is Portsmouth. Hamble is a long walk from any boat: One of the marinas up near bursledon bridge is a better bet for trains on the hamble (bursledon station, but requires change of trains and only 1 per hour) . Southampton is reasonably far and easy to get lost if you don't know the place. Lymington involves changing trains.

Portsmouth Harbour station (*Not* "Portsmouth and Southsea" which is the stop before: make sure your crew know this) is approx 1hour40mins from Waterloo station with 2 fast trains and one slower (1 hour 50) train every hour plus the slow cheap train previously mentioned (over 2 hours, goes to victoria). Gun Wharf is in the middle of many bars and restaurants but is rolly, crowded in summer and not an ideal place to just turn up. Most people would use the Gosport Marinas. The ferry is 2 mins from portsmouth harbour station, 4 min ride across the harbour and you then have the choice of Premier Marina (4 mins walk), Haslar Marina (7 mins walk) or Royal Clarence (15 mins walk). I like teh latter, but if you're just there for a crew change Premier (which can be a bit rolly) is best placed for both the ferry and chandlers (2 of the best, though not biggest, within 5 mins walk)

Hi

Southsea marina is not only the best one but will without doubt be the cheapest. The staff are fantastic. Anything in the hamble will be expensive because of the rivers notoriety in the sailing fraternity.

Live for today!!

My suggestion is rather different. Avoid all the complications of both Portsmouth and Southampton, and head directly to Cowes on the Isle-of-Wight. (Yes, the world famous yachting centre!). Cowes Yacht Haven marina is only a few minutes walk from the Redjet fast ferry to Southampton. If your crew can get themselves to Southampton train station, then I'm sure they will have no trouble getting to the Isle of Wight ferry! (it's walking distance, but there is also a free bus).

(just check that your visit does not clash with Cowes Week Regatta, or the Round-the-Island race ..... but those will cause a berthing problem everywhere)

Cowes is convenient, but it costs several £ per person each way to the mainland.
That may or may not be seen as good value.
It's not so bad to get to London from Chichester, Lymington, Poole, Port Solent even.
further west, Weymouth is a possible.
To the East, Brighton is a cab ride from marina to station.

Brighton is better for transport links. That is why I berth my boat there. There is a very frequent bus service from the marina to the railway station. There are frequent trains directly to Gatwick.
