Crew rescued from stricken tug off Devon coast

"A boat that collided with a tug it was being towed by has sunk."

is this a first?

was watching this earlier today on the box. seems like another example of crass incompetence by professionals.

the mca claimed itself a great success but surely this cant be so, not a single conviction.

Why tow the damn thing from Germany to Turkey some 3000 Nms just to scrap her

Because Germany is too green and politically correct to permit such a messy process as scrapping on their territory, so ship the issue off to some place where people are less fastidious. The German Greens van themn believe they are saving the world while all they are doing is displacing work from Europe to other countries. The EU is attempting to get all of Europe to operate on the same basis.

they didnt! lol

who ever heard of a ship being sunk by a tug it was being towed by and the tug only got a 10cm scratch?

insurance investigators are going to be all over this like a rash.

I happened to be talking to someone yesterday who has a great deal of life long experience with tugs, both UK and in Scandinavia, he is still in the business.

I made some flippant remark along the lines of what has already been posted. He told me that a tug being hit by it tow is a potential danger on every operation. He suggested its a bit like towing a car without brakes or a driver. That is why you will see a tug fore and aft on container ships in the Solent, one being towed in reverse, to act as a brake.

Indeed. Didn't something similar happen to that submarine they had to pull off a sandbank?

the ship has brakes ( large propeller) but not much control side ways.
i think container ships run on light oil when approaching & in hbr

Indeed - you're towing an object that was designed to slip through the water ... it's been decommissioned - you can't just stop - you have to consider how to slow down at the right pace to allow the towed vessel time to loose momentum - they'd have to consider wind/tide as well.
At least when I've towed it's been fairly simple as the relative weights are about the same and vessel reaction time is far quicker!

Are you sure? Surely just as unlikely explanation is that Germany does not have a lot of coast and what it does have is too high priced for using as ship scrap yards and too expensive a work force... bigger profit in making ships. Turkey has lots of cheap coast and lots of cheap semi skilled labour... perfect for making money out of old tubs. Rampant greens saving the world with their environmental wailing has less to do with it than the Daily Mail will tell you. Money makes the world go round the world go round the world go round....... money oh hell, sing it yourself.

Maybe they'll start here:
Divers temporarily repaired the 40cm (16ins) gash in the tug's hull and it is now being towed to Portland for further repairs.
The 10cm scratch is possibly of lesser importance.
