CREDIT? ... WHERE IT\'S DUE!
Allowing for the honeymoon effect of another 'new' boat, I wanted to highlight some exceptionally nimble and swift action by Lombard Marine Finance. My sailing cat. in Greece is under offer and our Nimbus look-alike ALCHEMY is now going on the market because we fell in love with a little Nelson 27 and needed our first marine mortgage very quickly as a bridging loan. Checked out Barclays who had a very good sales manager but they wanted Part 1 Reg. (another £500) and their paperwork was more demanding. Lombard wanted the fundamentals but seemed also to make a judgment of the individuals concerned. They were prepared to lend us more than usual (and I don't think my credit rating is THAT special) and working with them was like having a full-time personal adviser alongside. To ensure that we completed the deal with the vendor and Berthon before the Bank holiday weekend, we signed-up at Lombard's Southampton office on Tuesday. They checked the survey, confirmed with underwriters and prepared all the paperwork, and arranged for a staff member to go to Berthon at Lymington to check the vendor's documents and original invoices, etc, on Thursday morning. These were confirmed OK on the phone the same day and an electronic transfer of funds was arranged for Friday midday. We drove the boat away on Friday afternoon and later that evening the lady from Lombard that had looked after us throughout telephoned to see if we were on the boat!! The whole arrangement was made in little more than two weeks which was very impressive and agreeable, I think. I would add that the negotiations with Berthon were refreshingly businesslike and professional, too. It was stressful but a pleasure to do this business with such support and assistance - and a far happier transaction than I had with a dealer/broker on an earlier occasion.
Apart from sharing the same surname with one person, we have no connection with the individuals or companies involved.
I'll try and post a photo of our new boat if I can work out how to do it...
