Insurers come in for a fair bit of stick and general cynicism on these pages, so it's a pleasure to report otherwise.

I have a boat for sale, currently on the hard and insured just for that. Yesterday a prospective purchaser requested a sea-trial, so one of the jobs to do was to extend my cover. I e-mailed my insurer, Bishop Skinner/Bluefin, yesterday at 1600. This morning I received word that my cover was extended to cover the sea-trail at no extra cost.

At about the same moment the potential buyer changed his mind (rats!), so I e-mailed my insurer again to explain that cover was no longer required. This came back within minutes:

Sorry to hear your news - what I've done is to apply the permission to the policy anyway so, if another purchaser appears you can allow sea-trial on the same basis as agreed before.

Isn't life simple when it's all this...er, simple? And I have to say that I've always received this level of service from them.

My boat is on the market. I emailed my insurers Admiral Yacht Insurance to get coverage. Same day they emailed me back a certificate covering the broker for sea trials. No charge.

Great service as always from them.

Just to elaborate the essence of my earlier post, and that of Ex-SolentBoy, it's the difference between dealing with a corporate culture of "yes if we possibly can" and all its myriad, jobsworth opposites. The first leaves you feeling satisfied and even a little bit warm; the other leaves you wanting to kick something. Why any company should believe the second option serves their interests is beyond me.
