Tragedy!
John Ryan of Capn Pugwash has died. No more refuting the existence of Seaman Stains, Roger the cabin boy or Master Bates. An era has gone!

Ryan’s first foray into the field of children’s entertainment came while still teaching at Harrow when he created and drew the comic strip “Captain Pugwash, the Story of a Bad Buccaneer and of the many Sticky Ends which nearly befell him

It seems there was a Mrs Pugwash, too. (Perhaps she resembled Mrs Povey.)

Sadly, the Seaman Staines etc was just an urban legend. The Guardian published an article with these references, Ryan sued them, and they lost!

I think it was Tom the cabin boy, Master Mate and no stains of any kind
Loved it when I was ahem ... younger than I am now.
