1981 Beneteau 42, engine 4000 hours and not working, new sails required, teak needs replacing or re-caulking. Old electronics, boat has been in the water these last 7 years so needs a good clean. Asking 23000 euro's. New rigging this winter coming. Inside she looks clean and dry. If the hull is OK would it be worth a punt.

Say 7-10 grand for new sails, another 3 to recondition the engine and then a few more to replace electronics and the lines. Or pay 46000 for a tidier example that would need less work and be in near sail away condition.

I've done up boats in the past, but nothing quite this size. So I'd do most of the work myself, got me think maybe, if they accept 18000 to take it off their hands.

What say you.

If you can do most of the work yourself, why not ? Sounds like a nice project if you're up to it. Good Luck

Could easily be ten grand for new sails, ten grand for a new engine, ten grand for electronics (depending on how much of an e-freak you are) and thirty grand to replace a teak deck. And at the end of al that, you have a thirty year old Beneteau.

Love to see the link to the ad?

If by 'teak needs replacing' you mean teak decks, I would think be very wary. I am no expert in any way but if these boats have balsa cored decks and a significant amount of water has got in you could be into nightmare territory.

Usually better to pay more for a boat with no major problems and spend on improvements rather than remedial work. However you have to look at it from your own perspective and decide whether the end result after all the work and expense meets your needs. For example a new deck on this size boat in teak will cost as much as the asking price, but you could strip it an refinish with epoxy glass for say €5k and a lot of hard graft.

So be realistic about your expectations and budget which will determine what you have to pay for the boat.

The boat is in Italy and will need to remain in Italy until fit to sail.

I would imagine that sourcing gear and professional help is likely to be difficult and expensive.

It certainly is in Spain and Portugal!

I would agree, being in Italy will be a show stopper, I have considered doing similar, done the sums, even if you got the boat for free you would be unlikely to come out on top if you intended to bring boat back to UK, never mind the hassle factor.
Look for a bargain in the UK, lots out there if you can put the leg work in...

I live in land locked Prague, but have a job that gives 2 months off during the summer months. I would hope to get her sailing fit and move her to Croatia, then it would only be a 7 hour drive away. I do think 23000 is optimistic. Think she's been for sale since 2011.

Don't know, your guess is as good as mine, but I'm thinking if it hasn't turned over in 4 years it would need some major surgery or just a straight replacement.

Do the sums, offer less then 10k against those sums, and get a survey being prepared to run away. Doesn't sound like they are that desperate to sell though.

I started an old van diesel engine only the other day. It had been sitting in a yard for seven years. Put on a new battery and it started within a second.

Have you been on her?

In view of this info, ignore my comments above, based on the assumption you were UK based...

Another factor might be whether she is the boat you want to keep for yourself for several years. If everything is brought up to scratch you will have a boat you can rely on and have relatively low maintenance costs for several years, this is worth quite a lot - to you. Try and sell her on and this expenditure is unlikely to be recouped.

Engine might be fixable for not much money.
You might get some cheap used sails from a racing boat?

OTOH, there are a lot of small (and not so small) items that will be cost and/or hassle, from rigging though to blocks and interior varnish.
Plumbing, windows, hatches, fridge , batteries, you name it.
You may need a few $k for upholstery.
Osmosis could be an issue.

I would take a long hard look at cost in time and money to achieve whatever standard you are thinking of.
That could be anything between 'bodge it and sail it' and a full restoration.

7 yrs in the water and 1980s boat , id be shocked if it didnt have osmosis ,

headlinings too are notorious and exspensive .

skin fittings , hull fittings , tail shaft and prop all need good check (if still there !.)

guess will need full rewire and batteries , equipment.

if it was free , i would think twice .
