Has anyone any experience of this model of boat. There is a 1999 one for sale at around £75K with twin 63P Volvo diesels with shaft drives - is this good value?

It appears to have only 196 hours on it - does seem to be odd?

any views will be welcome

Hello I know a friend who owns a 41 Med, his second boat after owning a Seawings 285 and he his very happy about it. Now he has it for about six years.
I also know a couple of owners who had and have the 40 Med. This model was produced as 40 from 1990 to 97, and 41 from 98 to 2002.

The 41 differs from the 40 with an extended bathing platform, exterior wet bar to port side, higher wind screen in stainless steel frame, longer by about 2 metres and higher railing, alloy tow rail, and Volvo 63P 370hp instrad of the 306hp standard or optional 380hp (cant remeber the model name of these).

Everyone I know was always very satisfied with the 40 or 41 Med, and each upgrade in size was always deemed a downgrade in other areas. These are people I know who upgraded to Sunseeker and Pershings about 10 feet longer and still say the 40/41 is one of the best boats they ever had.

What to like
- acres of aft deck space still among the most spacious in this size
- aft deck has flash no steps or stairs
- easy communication for the side decks
- one of the most well balanced boats ever made (engine and props are in the right place) boat is dry, and trims a beauty
- good engine room space

Not to like. (the 41 improved a lot of areas like the railing, wood panels in cockpit flooring etc)
- the side deck sloop outside which are a bit to get used to (41 solves a bit this as railing is longer and u have t-rail)
- cheap alloy toe rails
- small second guest cabin
- engine room in GRP Panels which can open it all very easy (still better to 40 as it had marine ply with grey plastic covered panels) they work well but I dont like it.

I think thats sums it all!
If you like the boat, is very hard to find a better boat to the Cranchi 41 Med which is classic & timeless. If an example is well maintained and dont want the latest of integrated windshields, radar arch, hard tops etc it is made for you!

thanks

many thanks for the comprehensive reply this is helpful - what do you think about the price as i can only find overseas models for sale and they range from £95 - £135 so this one sounds cheap and i wonder why?
Should i be worried if it is too cheap - i have had a boat previously but no tin this league so i am nervous at spending £75k.

Also the engine at 196 hours doesnt seem much fo rthe year or is this about right?

cheers

Those engines are new at 196eh. Or to say it better for them they are starting to get used.
I heard great reviews on those engines, and Cranchi are very reliable boats.
The price is awesome, amd it might be an owner who wants to sell quick! You gotta look at it to decide this, and even after that a survey would be a must.

In a sense, that's even too little.
I mean, you can often find such low usage on abandoned/neglected boats - whatever the reasons behind that.
But it might be great news if everything was properly maintained, winterised, etc. A proper survey should find out.

Aside from seconding all comments from PYB, this old review from Pascoe popped to my mind, you might be interested to have a look.

Good luck. Oh, and welcome to the madhouse!

thanks MapisM

I have looked at the link and it is all useful.

thanks to both of you for your help i am going to look at it tomorrow to see it for myself so i will find out more - i understand he wants a quick sale due to a divorce so we shall see.

I will not buy a boat without a full survey so i should be able to pick up info then as well

cheers
Martin

Dont forget to have an equally good look at the paperwork too. It might tell you lots such as locations, number of owners, dates and hours of services, missing time periods etc. The last yard to service it might know something about the boat and owner, so make a small note of them.
Gaps might not be suspicious;lots of people are sloppy with bits of paper. Lots of missing records might be more alarming and a full history might well give you more confidence.
