Just been reading Alan Harper’s email newsletter (haven’t been out and bought MBY yet), where he talks about the rubblings on compulsory licensing, seemingly being promoted by our raggie friends.

The thought of this fills me with horror. Not because I’m against anything that improves safety afloat, but because the various potential licensing authorities have a terrible track record in this respect.

We’ve already had a great debate about the MCA regs. regarding vessels over 45ft, courtesy of Masaccio. From what I’ve heard from discussion hereabouts, the BSS is an equal shambles. People spending money on bringing their boats up to standard, then finding the EA move the goal posts and it all has to be done again. Let alone the questionable merit of some of the requirements.

If this is extended to cover all craft, presumably power and sail (translation – stinkies & raggies), with goodness knows what authorities pulling in different directions, what hope is there?

Or is this all too much doom & gloom?

I donot see the point in panacking
see what the regs are
see how they are being implemented/enforced
see what penalty is
see if you want to comply
