Bit of a bizzare question. What is the crackling noise you can hear when moored in the Med through the hull? I have heard several explanations but am not convinced by them (including my own one!). I have also heard a very similar noise SCUBA diving in the Red Sea. Anyone have any thoughts?

Shrimps. I've heard them in all kinds of places where the water is warm.

I've heard shrimps make a crackling noise when thrown into a stir fry, so I expect your right.

Ha! My suggestion was shrimps as well. I'm a marine Biologist so I guess I should know ... Definetely looks like the consensus is shrimps... Thanks for the suggestions. The sound file above certainly sounds very similar....

It's the spontanious collapse of integrity in the glassfibre filaments in your GRP. Given an uninterupted continuation of this in an average yacht lay-up I would estimate that you boat will unexpectedly collapse into a pile of floppy resin within about 36 hours.

Shrimp??
Barnacles trying to latch on. It's very common here and we don't have shrimps in close to land.

Try getting to sleep in a alloy boat here without a few rums /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif The noise is huge.
