Decided to polish up the prop today, having read on here how the paint stripper thingies on the angle grinder do such a good job.
Bad move, discovered a crack that would have gone unnoticed under all the crud.
The crack goes from half way up one blade right into the key way.
Man in engineers place said its too much too mend, so has anyone got a spare 12 X 15 left handed prop with a 25 mm tapered hole?
It's off a Macwester 27 1976 vintage 23 HP Volvo MD11.

Hello Ron,

It's a while since we chatted. Hope you are OK?

Sorry I can't help with your prop, but you will also have to work out the shaft taper. It could be 1/10 or 1/12/ sometimes these props are available on Ebay. I waited a year for a suitable one, but had to buy a new one in the end. £180 for an 11x8.

Regards

Geoff

Are you sure it is 25mm? More likely to be 1" from that era. If the material is sound it could well be repaired by a specialist. Try Steel Developments.

Geoff,
where did you get your prop from. I want to go sailing, not messing about with all this maintainance stuff. Big plans to sail round Ireland this year.
Tranona,
I am sure you are correct, but I have been trying to come up to speed with all this modern stuff. As soon as I manage to do stuff on the computer they change the operating system and I have to start over again.
Unfortunately I am based in Gal;way in Ireland and the only engineering firm I have in this area says it's too bad to mend.
I may have to learn how to sail.

Hi Capt'n Ron,

I got my prop from C & O Engineering, Unit 11, Watermota Works, Abbotskerswell, Newton Abbot, TQ12 5NF (01626 367782)

http://www.yell.com/biz/c-and-o-engineering-newton-abbot-1840691/

There must be many other suppliers, but they were closest to me, and great service.

I would suggest you phone Alex Dugan at Ards Stainless Marine, Donaghadee:

http://www.yell.com/biz/ards-stainless-marine-donaghadee-5871609/

He repaired my stainless Yanmar exhaust elbow at a fraction of the cost of a new one, and I would think he's have contacts who know all about propellers.

I have no interests in either company only as a completely satisfied customer!!

Best wishes,

Geoff

Looks like I need a new one. I have tried three different engineering places now, and they all say that as the crack goes right through to the key way and travels the whole length of the key way, it is impossible to mend.
One place suggested Michigan Props for a new one. They look good (and expensive) any thoughts?

Sillette Sonic stock Radice props which I think you will find are well priced. Check carefully the shaft size as I suggested above because the tapers should be different. A 1" is normally 1:12 and a 25mm is 1:10 - although sometimes they are mixed!

how much wold a foundry charge to cast a new one using yours for the mould pattern ?

A new 12" prop is £215 + VAT list. Fully machined and ready to fit. Doubt you would find a foundry to make a pattern, cast it and machine the taper for less than that.
