There appears to be a crack in the exhast elbow of my Yanmar YSB. I was thinking of taking the elbow complete with the joint and swan neck off , since they seem rusted and thus fused together, and then taking to an engineer to see if it can be welded.

It looks like just three bolts on the elbow to head, and then a few couplings from the swan neck to pipe.

Access seems pretty good.

Any tips or advice would be gratefully received.

Regards Nick

The exhaust riser of my YSE8 broke off where it was weakened by the thread joining it to the exhaust elbow. In my installation, there was quite a lot of weight cantilevered on this end of the exhaust, giving rise to a lot of vibrational stress. This may well be the reason for the cracking you see. I got a replacement riser and swan neck made up. It was still heavy, so in an attempt to relieve the elbow of some stress, I put a metal support strap from the riser, attached to a convenient bolt somewhere on the engine. I don't know if this did help much, but it survived for the rest of my ownership.
Repair welding of a cracked, corroded elbow casting may be not worth while. If it fractures complelely, the engine is virtually un-usable, I motored only 2 or 3 minutes in this state and the cabin was covered in oily soot, and I thought the exhaust was clean !! Also, with no exhaust pressure, cooling water is no longer ejected and may come out at the breakage. If you do have it welded, consider extra support.
